Spring Spotlight: Catching Up With Back-To-Back State Champ Briggs Ranstorm (2020)
As we move into the the Spring season, Prep Hoops Idaho is dedicated to keeping you up to speed on the top prospects in the state. Many of the state’s top talent will be playing with club teams while also polishing their game on their own. Stay tuned to our Spring Spotlight Series as we cover the state’s very best and track their whereabouts this Spring season.
First up in our Spring Spotlight Series is Rocky Mountain’s Briggs Ranstorm, a top 5 2020 prospect in the Gem state. Ranstorm is coming off an excellent sophomore season that saw he and his Rocky Mountain teammates lift the state title trophy for a second consecutive season. Ranstorm boasted averages of 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.2 steals over 19 contests last season. Ultimately, Ranstorm earned All 5A SIC Honorable Mention honors to cap off a thrilling 2017-2018 season for the Grizzlies.
Prep Hoops Idaho caught up with Ranstorm as he took a moment to think back on his excellent back-to-back state title run that included 16 straight wins to finish off the season. Ranstorm’s ability to earn minutes at the varsity level early on in his prep career has been invaluable and something Ranstorm doesn’t seem to take for granted. “Last season was a lot of fun to play with my senior brother (Hunter Ranstorm) and win a state championship. Our team was full of guys that wanted to make each other better. This made practices a constant battle and got us prepared for the season. These last two years I’ve gotten to be a part of state championship teams with great upperclassmen leaders to show me what it takes to win a state championship. One of my highlights was catching a lob from my big brother and winning a state and district championship with my teammates.”
Ranstorm was a key piece of Rocky Mountain’s championship squad as he posted 16 points and 5 rebounds in their tough one point win over Borah (a team who had beat them earlier in the season) at the state tournament. It was Ranstorm’s tough and gritty play that helped his team get past one of the state’s best young talent filled teams in Borah.
In terms of this Spring, Ranstorm told us, “for Spring basketball I’ll be playing with Boise Slam and traveling to tournaments around the west. I’ll also be doing a lot of lifting.” Boise Slam is one of the top grass roots organizations in the Boise area and Ranstorm will get plenty of opportunities to develop even more under the experienced coaching staff with Boise Slam.
While Ranstorm is already a top player of the 2020 class, and in the entire state in terms of next level potential, he understands his journey and is always looking at getting better. “Some things I’m going to be working on this Spring is getting physically stronger to be able to get more done in the paint this next season. I will also be working more on my pull-up jumper and my three pointer, and being able to create for my teammates and myself.”
We look forward to tracking Ranstorm’s progress with Boise Slam this Spring and into the Summer season as he continues to grow his game, evaluators should take note on Ranstorm as he will return for his Junior season even better than before.
