Iowa All-State Teams: Class 2A
FIRST TEAM
Player of the Year: Alec Oberhauser, Aplington-Parkersburg (2018)
Stats: 16.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 3.1 steals, 2.2 blocks, 58.6 FG%
Unlike a few of the other classes, you could legitimately make an argument for any player named to the 2A First Team as a Player of the Year in the class, but at the end of the day, it’s the 6-5, stat-sheet stuffing point guard from Aplington-Parkersburg that gets the nod. Oberhauser is just one of three players to average at least seven rebounds and seven assists on the season (Massner and Carlisle’s Tommy Donovan), and while Massner scored more, Oberhauser’s stats came against a higher level of competition, and he made a major impact on both ends of the floor, averaging over three steals and two blocks a game in leading the Falcons to a third place finish at State. The future Grand View Viking put together a sensational career at A-P and was a nightly triple-double threat in addition to his prowess on the defensive end. He’s one of the few players in the state who could absolutely dominate a game without scoring.
Trenton Massner, Wapello (2018)
Stats: 22.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 2.8 steals, 60.8 FG%, 45.0 3P%
Massner culminated a stellar career at Wapello by leading the Indians to their first state tournament appearance since 1994. He posted eye-popping numbers on both ends of the floor, with fantastic efficiency numbers to boot, and he’s a walking highlight film. You don’t see many 6-0 guards who can jump like Massner can. He’s a freak athlete who put together a great senior year for Wapello, landing him a first team all-state spot.
Parker Badding, Kuemper Catholic (2018)
Stats: 22.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals, 53.5 FG%, 46.5 3P%
Most people around the state expected this to be a down year for the Knights after they lost one of the best players in school history (Matt Dentlinger) to graduation. But Badding made sure that there wasn’t much of a decline, leading Kuemper back to the state tournament for the third straight season, averaging just under 23 points a game and posting some fantastic shooting splits (54-47-81). He was third in Class 2A in scoring, and broke the Kuemper single-game scoring record when he went for 44 points in their season opening win over rival Carroll. He’ll play college ball at Nebraska-Kearney.
Jacob Vis, Western Christian (2019)
Stats: 18.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.0 steals, 2.2 blocks, 71.0 FG%
The 6-6 big man was thoroughly dominant for the Wolfpack this season, averaging 18.5 points and nearly nine rebounds to go with 52 blocks on the season. Western Christian was once again one of the top teams in Class 2A before getting upset by Badding and company in the substate final, and Vis and his 71% from the floor was a large reason why. He’s also the reason that the Wolfpack will open next season near the top of the 2A rankings yet again.
Dillon Faubel, Treynor (2018)
Stats: 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.6 steals
Treynor entered the state tournament undefeated and with the No. 1 seed attached to them, and Faubel is the biggest reason why. The lead guard was second on the team in scoring, dished out 147 assists on the year and was second in steals. While third-teamer Luke Clausen led the Cardinals in scoring, it was Faubel who was the straw that stirred the drink for Treynor on both ends of the floor.
SECOND TEAM
Marco Balderas, South Hamilton (2018)
Stats: 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 2.1 steals, 52.7 FG%
The diminutive point guard has been one of the state’s toughest guards for years now, and he put it all together with a fantastic senior season that ended prematurely at the hands of Aplington-Parkersburg in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. But he was great in that loss, scoring 24 points with no turnovers. He’s a menace on the defensive end of the floor, and one of the most protective and productive lead guards in the state on the offensive end.
Isaac Prewitt, Des Moines Christian (2018)
Stats: 21.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.4 steals
One of the top scorers in 2A, Prewitt took the reins of the Lions this season and was fantastic, posting 50-39-82 shooting splits and leading the team in assists in addition to his scoring prowess.
Carter Cuvelier, Aplington-Parkersburg (2019)
Stats: 19.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.3 steals, 60.0 FG%
Cuvelier was A-P’s leading scorer and rebounder on the season, and he shot 60% from the floor, helping pace Class 2A’s highest scoring offense. A strong wing with a penchant for getting to the free throw line, he led the class in free throws made and attempted on the year.
Haris Hoffman, Cascade (2019)
Stats: 12.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.4 steals, 54.3 FG%, 48.9 3P%
Hoffman didn’t post any eye-popping numbers, but he was the leading scorer and rebounder for the state champion Cougars, the headliner of a remarkably balanced team that had all five starters average between 8.1 and 12.3 points a game. He did his scoring with remarkable shooting splits (54-49-80), and his work during state tournament week was enough to get him named the 2A All-Tournament Captain.
Tyus Arends, Sioux Center (2018)
Stats: 15.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.8 steals, 58 3PM
Arends tied for the team lead in scoring for the Warriors, who spent some time at the top of our rankings in 2A. A gifted scorer from all three levels, few in the state could defend him when he really gets it going. His 58 made 3s were a top-20 number in the class, and he contributed across the board for one of 2A’s most explosive teams.
THIRD TEAM
Zaine Leedom, East Marshall (2018)
Stats: 15.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.3 steals, 1.1 blocks. 60.6 FG%
Luke Empen, Northeast, Goose Lake (2018)
Stats: 16.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 1.2 blocks, 58.3 FG%
Ryan Schmitt, Van Meter (2019)
Stats: 14.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.2 steals, 3.0 blocks, 60.7 FG%
Luke Clausen, Treynor (2018)
Stats: 17.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.6 steals, 76 3PM
James Betz, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (2019)
Stats: 15.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.7 blocks, 51.8 FG%
FOURTH TEAM
Jared Nichols, Colfax-Mingo (2018)
Dev Patel, Camanche (2018)
Sam Snyder, Forest City (2018)
Kyle Boerhave, Sheldon (2018)
Beau Cornwell, West Branch (2019)
