Recruiting Report: Zach Lester (2018)
After a dominant senior season with Clear Lake, one in which he averaged a whopping 30.2 points per game, Zach Lester put himself in elite company.
Only Iowa-bound Joe Wieskmap and Drake commit Garrett Sturtz scored more than Lester this season. And the athletic 6-foot guard has D1 aspirations of his own; first, though, he’ll take a JuCo route.
Lester committed to Boone’s DMACC earlier this month. He had other offers or serious interest from NIACC, Iowa Lakes, Kirkwood, Grand View and Waldorf.
“I wanted to go JuCo, because I want to play at the Division I level at some point in my career. So, I felt like that was my best option. And I chose DMACC because I kind of wanted to get out of the North Iowa area and explore new things.”
Lester will bring an improved and still-improving jumper to the Bears, and some bounce, too.
“I think my jump-shot was decent last year, but not where it needed to be and I really worked on that in the offseason, during summer. And, also, my team really bought in this year, and wanted to win games. My teammates helped me a lot to get where I got this year,” said Lester.
“I could dunk on occasion last year, but this year I was really able to get up higher and I tried to dunk every time I went up this year. You know, if you can get up higher, it’s tougher to get your shot blocked.”
After visiting the DMACC campus in Boone earlier this month, Lester liked what he saw and swiftly made the decision to commit.
“I visited recently and loved the campus and everything,” said Lester. “I went home and thought about it for a little bit, and called them after the visit.”
For the next two years in Boone, Lester will continue to hone his craft. And hope the D1 coaches notice.
“I’m just going to keep working on my jump-shot and my finishing ability. I’m going to keep working on my defense; it’s hard enough to guard guys in high school, but it’s gonna be even harder to guard guys in college,” said Lester. “So, that’ something I’ll really need to work on.”
