State Championships: Top unsigned seniors at 5A in Topeka
TOPEKA, Kan. — The state’s quarterfinal round of play in the Kansas 5A state tournament in Topeka featured several thrilling games, including a 68-64 upset win by Mill Valley over Eisenhower behind a huge performance by Loyola recruit Cooper Kaifes.
Also posting wins were Salina Central over Wichita Heights (54-46), Pittsburg over Topeka Seaman (59-40) and Bishop Carroll over Schlagle (68-57).
Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at some of the top unsigned college prospects in Topeka.
Devin Davis, 6’1, G, 2018, Wichita Heights (pictured)
Although he didn’t have his best night shooting the basketball, Davis has earned a reputation as one of the state’s premier outside shooters over the years. He put together a solid summer competing with the Wichita Padres, then helped lead Heights to a 19-3 season. He finished with seven points and was 1 for 6 from 3-point range, but also added four rebounds and four assists, showing an all-around game.
Tyon Grant-Foster, 6’6, F, 2018, Schlagle
Smooth. Foster has a well-rounded offensive game to go along with good size and length. He is probably at his best in the mid-range or attacking the basket, but also has a developing 3-point jumper as well. Foster is also a terrific defensive player who surprises with his ability to block shots — has great timing and reaction as a shot blocker. He finished with a game-high 19 points on Wednesday in a loss to Bishop Carroll.
Ronnell Mitchell, 5’6, PG, 2018, Schlagle
Although he isn’t very big at 5’6, Mitchell brings elite speed and quickness to the court and brings good leadership qualities to the court as a solid, all-around point guard. He will need to improve his outside shooting ability, but gets to the basket and finishes around bigger players.
Curtis Profit, 5’10, G, 2018, Wichita Heights
Profit is a shot creator with good speed and quickness and has the ability to score at all three levels. He led Heights with 14 points on Wednesday in a loss to Salina Central, showing the ability to create mid-range jumpers, went 2 for 4 from 3-point range and scored several big buckets to help keep Heights in the game late.
DeShaun English, 6’6, F, 2018, Pittsburg
English is a long, rangy forward who brings rim protection and the ability to finish around the basket, but also brings a diverse skill set to the court.. English went for a game-high 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a block, showing the ability to face up and attack the basket, knock down an outside shot and challenge opponents in the paint.
Jeffrey Wake, 6’2, G/F, 2018, Eisenhower
Wake has good size and shows a good all-around game. His calling card might be as an outside shooter, but he is also a good rebounder, passer and has the ability to play inside-out basketball. On Wednesday, he finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
