BURKE, VA — Lake Braddock Secondary School played host to the VHSL 5A State Semifinal between Wakefield and Edison. The Warriors defeated the Eagles by a final score of 82-66, and will play for the state title this Thursday vs. Varina. Here we recap this postseason duel with five takeaways.
WARRIORS SUCCEED BEHIND BALANCED ATTACK
Four players hit double figures in the scoring column last night for Wakefield. They were paced by seniors Ben Horsford and Amari Cooper, who combined for 37 points. 2018 Lukas Hatcher scored a season-high 13, while Robbey Starkey added 13. 2019 Chris Warner did a bit of everything, recording 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.
WASHINGTON DOES ALL HE CAN FOR EDISON
2018 Marquis Washington was the standout for Edison, scoring 16 of his game-high 21 points in the first half. The unsigned senior also recorded a game-high 9 rebounds, and 5 steals. It was our first real chance to evaluate Washington, and he impressed with his consistent motor, sneaky athleticism, and versatility.
HORSFORD STRIKINGLY EFFICIENT
Ben Horsford had a great night offensively for Head Coach Tony Bentley. The class of 2018 guard shot 8 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 4 from downtown on his way to scoring a team-high 19 points. Horsford did a solid job hitting the defensive boards, rapidly pushing the ball in transition, and converting quickly.
SHURLAND WILLIAMS IS A SHOOTER
Shurland Williams had a quiet first half, but caught fire in the second. The 2018 guard, who hit 5 of 8 treys, showcased limitless range off the catch along with a quick release.
QUICK HITS
- 2018 Amari Cooper, who received a recent offer from Mt. Olive, is considered one of the best available prospects in the state. The athletic 6’5 wing recorded 18 points (7/9 FG), 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 turnovers, and 1 block last night.
- Marymount Head Coach Chris Rogers was in the house checking out 2018 Marquis Washington of Edison. The Saints a great track record recruiting local prospects in recent years.
- Wakefield has the chance to win the state title for the first time in 57 years. Their opponent Varina, who are ranked as a top 5 team in the state, could make things difficult. We expect the Warriors to compete, and give them a good chance to bring the trophy home.
