PSL’s Top Unsigned Seniors
If you know me, then you know that I am in love with PSL basketball. Basketball in Detroit is just different. Teams leave it out on the court night after night. The talent in this conference is top notch. As of now, the PSL will be sending four players to the Division 1 level with David DeJulius (East English Village/Michigan), Pierre Mitchell (Detroit Edison/Central Michigan), Gary Solomon (Detroit Edison/LIU Brooklyn), and Deante Johnson (Detroit Edison/Cleveland State). They will also be sending one player to the Division 2 level with Randy Gilbert (Cass Tech/Ferris State). However, with the commencement of state tournament coming on Monday, there are still a lot of unsigned talent remaining on the board. Here are some of the top unsigned seniors in the PSL:
Anthony Roberts 6’3 (Henry Ford): Roberts is one of the top uncommitted seniors in the mitten. The Henry Ford wing decommitted from Bryant University earlier in the season. He is a very strong scorer and defender. He uses his body to bully defenders down low and he uses his length to block and contest shots on the other end of the floor. Roberts has a decent touch from outside as well. As well as scoring and defending, Roberts is a strong rebounder and floor leader. He plays with a ton of poise every game.
Recruiting update: “I am currently being recruited by IUPUI, Ball State, New Mexico State, Drexel, St. Bonaventure, Dayton, Temple, Xavier, Jacksonville, and some more. I have to look and I plan on committing after taking visits to those schools and after the season.”
D’Juan Seal 6’4 (Detroit Pershing): Seal is one of the top shot blockers in the state. His LeBron-like chase down blocks present his team with many transition scoring opportunities. Seal blew up this spring and summer when he competed with REACH Legends on the NY2LA circuit. Seal is extremely strong when penetrating but he is not afraid to pull it from beyond thearc. Seal holds multiple Division 2 offers.
Recruiting update: “I will be visiting Ferris State, Northwood, Saginaw Valley, Grand Valley, Wayne State, Lewis university, and Lakeshore State in two weeks. I hold offers from Ferris State, Wayne State, Northwood Saginaw Valley, Grand Valley, and Lewis University.”
Tray Jackson 6’7 (Detroit Western): Jackson is the most intriguing unsigned senior size wise. The Detroit Western wing/big has an an extremely versatile game. He possesses a strong outside jump shot as well as strong foot work and post moves on the block. He’s an offensive mismatch against most bigs in the state due to this versatility. Jackson had a strong spring and summer with The Family (EYBL). He currently holds offers 5+ offers from mid major D1 schools. Recruiting update: “I will be attending Sunrise Christian Academy, a prep school in Kansas.”
Charles Brown 6’6 & Johnny Davis 6’8 (Detroit Pershing): The two Pershing bigs make their squad even more of a matchup nightmare than they already are. Brown and Davis are both strong post scorers and rim protectors. One of the main reasons being that their simply aren’t that many high school players with their size. Both play with a great motor and are great hustle players.
Charles Brown recruiting update: “I am currently getting recruited by Wayne state, Indiana Tech, McNeese State, and some other schools. I do not yet have time when I plan to commit.”
Johnny Davis Recruiting update: “I’m reclassifying down at Taylor made basketball in Florida.”
Zavon Godwin 6’5 (East English Village): Godwin compliments Dave DeJulius very well. They are arguably the most fun guard/big man duo to watch. Godwin is great in pick & roll scenarios. The EEVPA big has strong foot work and is great at putting himself in a position to score which often comes off of an offensive rebound. He run the floor very well and is a strong shot blocker. He also has a nice mid range touch so where ever he ends up he should be able to contribute.
Recruiting update: “I’ve got offers from Ferris State and Lewis University. I got a call from Wayne state today. Just got Grambling in the mix so that’s been it really just been staying focus on this title run and getting better everyday. I haven’t really decided when I’m going to make my decision on what school I want to attend. But my coaches and teammates got my back through this process.”
Marcus Gibbs 6’0 (MLK): Gibbs is one of the top shooters in the state. His strong touch from beyond the arc forces defenders to step up on him which often opens up a drive or his signature automatic floater. The MLK High guard had a strong spring and summer with Michigan Playmakers as he traveled around the Midwest and displayed his impressive shot in front of many college coaches. Gibbs is also a strong ball handler and defender.
Recruiting update: “I’m being recruited by so many schools on so many different levels. I plan to commit when the season is over after I explore all of my options and make it threw the state tournament. I am currently being recruited by D2’s like Florida Tech, Benedict College, etc and D1’s like Bethune Cookman and Eastern Michigan. I am open to be recruited by any school I have no favorites just want to do what’s best for me and my family”
Cortez Garland 6’0 (Renaissance): Garland has been having a breakout senior campaign for Renaissance. The senior guard has been averaging 13 PPG and 4 APG for his squad. Garland does a great job in getting to the bucket in transition as well as in the half court set. He is a strong defender and a great facilitator. Wherever he ends up, he is bound to make a college coach very happy with his hardworking work ethic. Recruiting update:” I’ve only been recruited by Alma College, as far as I know. I don’t have a definite time on my college commitment. I’m playing AAU again and hopefully offers start rolling in.”
Ron Hill 5’10 (Detroit Pershing): Hill is one of the main reasons that Pershing made it to the PSL championship game. Despite being defeated by Detroit Edison in the championship game, Hill never gave up. He single handedly broke the Edison press multiple times. Despite multiple turnovers, the kid never gave up. Hill is not the type of player that will wow you with his scoring ability. He is a floor general and a solid defender. He can get to the basket and hit shots from the outside, but he often directs the show for Pershing. Where ever he ends up, it will be like the school gained a talented guard as well as another coach.
