6A All-Tournament Team
The 6A State tournament went fairly according to plan with the top four teams, according to our rankings, meeting in the final four.
Pinnacle has had a number of talented teams, but has been unable to find a way to bring home the coveted rings. However, Mannion provided the exact spark they needed. He was incredible throughout the tournament. His strong play was vital to Pinnacle bringing home their first state title.
Below are other players who played a key role in their team’s success in the state tournament.
6A All-Tournament Team
MVP:
Nico Mannion 6’2 PG 2020 Pinnacle
Mannion was remarkable throughout the state tournament. In the state championship, he dominated from buzzer to buzzer in the same manner that he team did. Further, in the semifinals, his late game heroics were crucial to sending the game to overtime and eventually winning it.
He has supplanted himself as the top player in 6A, if not the entire state. He shoots the basketball at a high rate, has a high IQ, and is one of the best on-ball defenders in the state. Moreover, ball handling wise, his change of pace and direction is second to none in Arizona.
1st Team All-Tournament
Spencer Rattler 6’2 SG 2019 Pinnacle
Prior to announcing his retirement from high school hoops, Rattler played a crucial role in getting Pinnacle its first state championship win. His athleticism and ability to score the basketball were key for Pinnacle all season long. Moreover, he was the recipient of a number of full court heaves from the skilled Pinnacle guards. One of those passes game in the state championship in which he made a tremendous catch and finished it. Rattler’s lose will be huge for this team.
Trent Brown 6’1 PG 2019 Pinnacle
Brown took on more of a facilitator role throughout this season. However, his tough on ball defense and basketball IQ were monumental to the team’s success. His 9 assists and 0 turnovers were crucial to Pinnacle advancing past Desert Vista. While his role was not flashy, his glue guy mentality pushed Pinnacle over the edge.
Amarion Cash 6’4 SG 2018 Mountain Pointe
Cash’s efforts put Mountain Pointe in a position where they could play in the state championship. While he was solid throughout the tournament, there is no question in regards to his biggest shot of his high school career. With Brophy gaining momentum, he hit a huge 3 that extended the lead and was crucial to the team advancing past Brophy.
Jalen Graham 6’9 PF/C 2019 Mountain Pointe
Graham’s length has enabled him to make an impact all season long. With that said, his improved footwork has helped him as well. He has added some nice reverse pivots and counter moves out of it that got him a number of easy looks around the rim throughout the tournament. Graham’s ceiling is extremely high and it will be intriguing to watch him this summer.
Jaxson Baker 6’7 SF/PF 2018 Brophy
Baker had a solid tournament and showed that he can play the 3 or the 4. While the game did not go to his liking, he made a number of nice mid-range jumpers against zone defenses. Further, he crashes the glass well and has a soft touch around the rim. Baker will look to transition more to a true 3 at the D1 level. However, he is capable of being an undersized 4.
