The Morning After: Tuesday’s Tournament Recap
The opening round of the 6th and 7th Region tournaments started Tuesday, and it did not disappoint. A somewhat surprising win helped kick-off regional play around the Bluegrass. Prep Hoops Kentucky recaps the night that was in regional play around the Louisville area.
6th REGION
Doss vs. Fairdale
With around 3.0 seconds left on the game-clock, senior forward Terez Traynor’s (who has committed to play football at Western Kentucky) put back gave Louisville Doss a 72-70 victory over a Fairdale team that had won 13 or it’s last 16 games. Doss was led in scoring by senior guard Stephon Franklin, who poured in 24 points on the night. Senior guard Taye Calloway also scored 16 for the Doss Dragons. Doss moves on to the semifinal round to play defending regional champions Fern Creek. The Dragons defeated Fern Creek back in late January.
Fern Creek vs. Moore
Fern Creek was the clear favorite in this one. Defeating Moore 88-52. The Tigers had the best record against regional foes during the regular season, only losing to Doss. They will have a chance to avenge that loss in the next round.
Jeffersontown vs. Bullitt Central
Bullitt Central had one of it’s most successful seasons in recent memory this year, but it wasn’t enough to push them through the first round of the regional tournament. The Cougars doubled their overall wins from last season, but fell to Jeffersontown 66-54 last night. Jeffersontown has been led by the duo of Chris Trigg and Jordan Lyons all season. Both are averaging just over 11 points per game. They move on to play Plearsure Ridge Park in the semifinals.
Pleasure Ridge Park vs. Butler
Pleasure Ridge Park lost to Butler in January by 1 point, 49-50. They wouldn’t let it happen again. They won this won 45-43. Having now won three games in a row (during tournament play) against teams they lost to during the regular season, the Panthers now move on to the semifinals to play Jeffersontown. They beat Jeffersontown handily during their second game of the season. Senior forward Bryant Robinson led PRP with 13 points.
7th REGION
Ballard vs. Male
Marshon Ford‘s 17 points would help propel Ballard to a 83-67 win over Louisville Male. They will move on to the semifinal round to take on Louisville Central. Ballard beat Central earlier in the month 70-60.
Central vs. Seneca
Another last second winner here. Central’s Eric Rice hits a last second lay-up to move the Yellow Jackets into the semifinals. Central has an overall record of 10-15, but are 8-7 against regional opponents. They will play Ballard in the next round.
Trinity vs. Eastern
The top team in the region, and arguably the top team in the state, Trinity brushed off Eastern 64-27 to move on to the semifinal round. They will play St. Xavier, who they defeated back in January 46-34.
St. Xavier vs. DuPont Manual
DuPont Manual gave St. Xavier a run, but it was not enough. St. Xavier, led by Pierce Kiesler and his 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, defeated the Crimsons 56-49.
