Tuesday Sectionals: What Did We Learn
With Tuesday complete, we take a look through the day of games and highlight everything that happened and the best storylines of the bunch. Our look back at the first day of Sectionals.
Just A Couple Blowouts
Not like we didn’t expect a few lopsided victories because Sectionals aren’t necessarily the most balanced. However, you expect some of those lesser talented teams to put forth their best efforts of the season when the end of their careers are on the line. Nonetheless, Chesterton put up 92 on Kankakee Valley, Beech Grove with 95 on Herron, Bosse with 92 on Boonville, and Southwood with 97 on Clinton Central. All the outcomes are what you would think but still, those are statements those teams made.
South Knox Survives Linton in 3OT
This was expected to be a close battle. Linton was a solid pick to go really deep in the tournament. Personally, I had them going all the way to Semistate before running into major issues. But, South Knox is a very well coached, tough team and if you can take down Linton in your first game, you have a chance to do some damage as well.
Down Goes Wood Memorial
Been a fan of Wood Memorial for quite a while and really hoped to see them go far in this tournament. A potential matchup with Barr-Reeve would have been fun. But, we don’t get to see that as they were knocked off by Northeast Dubois. Big win for them and they now get a fairly easy Cannelton team on Friday.
Overtime For Everyone
On Tuesday, there were 6 overtime games. Zionsville with a single OT win over Logansport, Anderson a double OT thriller over Noblesville, Mishawaka Marian with a 3-point OT win over South Bend Washington, Vincennes Lincoln in a single OT game over Princeton, Tri-County with a single OT over South Newton, and South Knox triple OT over Linton. All of those were meant to be close game that could go either way and no surprise they went into overtime which is part of why this is the best week of basketball all year long. Close games, rivalries, and everything on the line.
Quick Hits:
Carmel 33, Westfield 24 – Setting basketball back decades but Westfield proved tough.
Lawrence North 71, Cathedral 63 – Huge win for LN but rival LC waits on Friday.
Warren Central 57, Arsenal Tech 34 – Warren was really struggling out of the gate. Just a note.
Avon 59, Plainfield 55 – Only Avon’s 5th win of the year. That is all.
Columbus North 81, Shelbyville 69 – Shelbyville was high-risk, high-reward. This was a risky night.
Jasper 65, Evansville Harrison 57 – Jasper’s 15th win of the year. Sleeper in a down Sectional.
NorthWood 59, Fairfield 39 – Upset? Kind of. Was really high on Fairfield and thought they had it.
Indian Creek 64, Tri-West 54 – Thought this was a horrible draw for TW. Tough, tough Sectional.
Shenandoah 53, Eastern Hancock 40 – Shenandoah handled this easily. Next two will be tougher.
Barr-Reeve 53, Shoals 38 – BR came flat out of the game. Figured it out, though.
