The Race for Mr. Basketball
It’s the final week of the regular season and not only are some of the section, conference, and state races close, the Mr. Basketball race for the Final Five is also close. Game by game, what is the latest on the ten finalists? Check out NHR.
Sy Chatman of CDH. The Raiders beat Woodbury Friday night without point guard Ryan Larson and adapting without him was tough at times, but Chatman gave his team 14 points, a couple steals and blocks, the normal boards, but had a tough night shooting making 5 of 13 shots and 4 of 7 boards.
Michael Jones of Woodbury. Jones made a big statement on Friday with his 27 points against the number one team in state. Michael hit from the arc, had a nasty two hand dunk going baseline to finish going by Raider D1 athletes, and he had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but had the shot fall out. Jones is now five points away from becoming the all time leading scorer at Woodbury and next up is Edina on Tuesday.
Tre Jones of Apple Valley. The Eagles blasted Lakeville South 75-50 and in 21 minutes played it was a tough shooting game for Jones. He made 3 of 10 field goals for his six points and missed all of his threes. That said, Jones had four steals, four rebounds, and had eight assists. The Eagles face Farmington (who just beat Lakeville North) and rival Eastview this week to finish the regular season.
Gabe Kalscheur of DeLaSalle. The outstanding February of Gabe Kalscheur continues as he scored 28 points against a usually strong Wayzata defensive unit. Gabe made 12 of 16 field goal attempts to score those 28 points on Friday and now the Islanders are playing their best basketball heading into the final week. DeLaSalle is 19-4 with games against St. Anthony and Columbia Heights remaining.
Owen King of Caledonia. The Warriors finished their season at 22-4 when they defeated Dover-Eyota on Tuesday. Owen scored 11 points as he was one of four guys in double figures before his team hit the bench early in the blowout win.
Jarvis Omersa of Orono. The Spartans earned themselves a convincing win over Delano on Friday with an outstanding team performance. Part of that performance was the explosive Omersa totaling 17 points with 18 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Jarvis also hit one three in the victory. Orono has games with Hutch and New Prague coming up to finish the year and they’re working on continuing their 13 game winning streak.
Daniel Oturu of CDH. Playing without point guard Ryan Larson (injured ankle) the Raiders beat Woodbury 65-64 hanging on to number one led by Daniel’s 22 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks. Oturu shot 9 of 16 from the floor, made all of his foul shots, and simply could not be stopped by Woodbury. The Raiders have a tough week coming up with three games in four days playing Roseville, Eden Prairie, and Park of Cottage Grove and they will likely have to do that without Larson.
Matt Todd of Monticello. The Magic lost to a really young Buffalo team 57-49 on Friday. Matt gave his team 28 of their 49 points but as a unit they group couldn’t do enough to beat the 12-12 Bison. The Magic dropped to 17-8 on the year and have a game with Rogers left before the playoffs begin.
Odell Wilson of Minneapolis North. Wilson not only scored 28 against 6-18 Minneapolis Southwest on Friday, Odell also recently grabbed his 1,000th rebound and seems very likely to hit the 2,000 point mark in his career. Next up is Minneapolis Edison and then I believe the next opponent is the Twin Cities Championship game which would be against St. Paul Johnson.
Calvin Wishart of Delano. Wishart did his best to keep Delano in the game with Orono scoring 27 points with 15 rebounds and five assists. Wishart was able to get his separation and playmake but his team just didn’t have enough pieces to compete with Orono on that night. This game ended the Delano four game winning streak and now the Tigers will try and get back on the winning side of things when they face Waconia and Hutch this week.
