PHD Playoff Central (ND): Bohl, Goven, and More!
Surprises in the North Dakota postseason races? There were a few. Top performers? There were a lot of those as well. PHD runs through yesterday’s playoff basketball in North Dakota.
PHD Playoff Central. One of last nights best performances was Rugby sophomore Trace Goven putting up 22 points, creating for others, and leading his team to a key win over Bottineau 64-59. The Panthers started quarter two on a 12-1 run and while the game was close, that stretch gave them the leverage to earn the win. Rugby will now face Velva for the District Championship tomorrow night.
Upset City! Standing Rock is 14-7 on the season and they have won 12 of their last 14 games so the upset isn’t the win over Solen as much as it is the total domination. Remember that on December 19th, Solen beat the Warriors 71-39. Last night was a 70 point turnover as the Warriors crushed Solen 71-33 this time. Five-foot-11 junior guard duo Ghavin Willard and Rhias Archambault each put a dozen points on the board with Andrew Brown, a 6-foot-1 senior win, also scoring in double figures. Next up in the Monday championship game of the District the Warriors now face Shiloh Christian who crushed New Salem-Almont by 29 as Macauley Young controlled the paint with 20 points and Jaden Mitzel hit four treys leading to his 14 points.
Cardinal Balance. Carrington improved to 18-2 on the year with their 50-46 victory over LLM last night. The 8th ranked team is what they are starting with Garrett Bickett but it’s more than their star guard. Junior frontcourt player Trey Rosenau finished several times early and junior wing Drew Page made some big plays late including clutch foul shots to put the game away. Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier will be the Carrington opponent next week in the title game. They got a nice game from senior big Lane Hanson who has really had a nice month up front at 6-foot-5.
Big Game Ben. Bishop Ryan is ranked fourth in the state and still a two loss team after knocking off MLS 60-51. Junior Ben Bohl is considered to be one of the elite juniors in the state and last night his 25 points including three late game foul shots with about a minute to go sealed the contest. With nine straight wins Bishop Ryan next faces Des Lacs Burlington, a team they beat by 24 earlier in the month.
Hat Tip to the Career. It was a tough season for Devils’s Lake but 6-foot-7 big Jagger Miller gave his team a solid 14 points and seven rebounds a night shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor despite a lot of defensive attention plus 66 percent from the free throw line. A solid career that should continue into college athletics.
There were no EDC upsets last night as GFRR crushed Valley City, Fargo North controlled Devils Lake, and Wahpeton beat Central by 11. Wahpeton now gets Davies, Fargo North will face West Fargo, and GFRR takes on Sheyenne on Tuesday.
Kam Gillies. Kam is a senior at Parshall and in their game with Watford City, a rebound and kick from each team fittingly gave this young man a chance to know down a three in the District contest. It didn’t take long as the video shows below. Sportsmanship at its best!
