Player of the Week: Tommy Donovan (Week 11)
Tommy Donovan (2018)
6’2 G, Carlisle
In the three years we’ve been covering Iowa high school basketball for Prep Hoops, there’s been very few stretches of games more impressive than what Carlisle senior Tommy Donovan recently strung together.
Of the Wildacts’ final five regular season games, Donovan triple-doubled in three of them, including the last two. Against Knoxville last Monday, the 6’2 do-it-all guard scored 11 points (he only shot the ball five times) to go with 13 rebounds and 11 assists. The following night, he scored 18 points to go with 14 rebounds and 10 assists.
In a 24-hour span, Donovan scored 29 points, snared 27 rebounds and dished out 21 assists.
Donovan has been impressive all season, though. The final two weeks were especially impressive, but his season-long averages of 16.2 points, 7.5 assists and 7.6 rebounds are as impressive of numbers across the board as almost any other 3A player in Iowa.
A future Black Hills State point guard, Donovan committed to the South Dakota Division II school last June after a moderately successful junior season. The Yellow Jackets coaches have likely been playing close attention to Donovan’s senior season, and certainly have to be pleased with his progress.
And he’s not done yet. Carlisle got by Centerville earlier this week in a Substate quartefrinal, Donovan posted 22 points and 11 assists in the win. Tonight, they’ll face Pella in Substate semifinal. The Wildacts’ Substate final would be Monday night against either Oskaloosa or Bondurant-Farrar.
