Prospect Spotlight: Trey Hoepner (2019)
Five-foot-11 junior guard Trey Hoepner leads Alexandria in assists and is scoring 16.1 points per game. NHR caught up with Trey today.
“As a team we started slowly with a couple of early losses, but really came together after that and have played some good basketball,” Trey said. “We had number of players adjusting to playing their first varsity basketball early on. Once they adjusted we really came together. It’s been fun to see the growth in the team.”
Trey doubles as a three point shooting weapon and at times a point guard handling the distribution duties.
“Coming into this year as the lone returning starter helped me adjust to my new role quickly,” Trey said. “Going from facilitator last year, to being a main option this year has been great.
“My teammates have been great and it’s been fun being a leader and helping them become better players as well.”
The Cardinals are coming off of a 77-49 win over Detroit Lakes plus double figure wins over Rocori, Apollo, Becker, Sartell, and Brainerd plus had a key win over ranked Sauk Rapids. There have been some losses but the stretch of games with Sauk Rapids, Big Lake, and Willmar is huge finishing the year.
“As a team, after a couple recent stumbles we are renewing our focus and energy and will finish the regular season strong with confidence,” Trey said.
“The section should be a challenge with a number of teams that have a chance to win it. We are confident we can be right there at the end.”
Trey is working hard as he wants to one day play basketball at the college level.
“I have been in contact with a few but nothing to serious,” Trey said. “I just need to keep putting in the time, getting better and hopefully more opportunities will come in the future as I would like to continue playing after high school.”
