Updated 2018 Rankings: New Faces
Recently, we updated our 2018 rankings. As these seniors finish up for their final high school basketball season and gear up for the playoffs, college looms large around the corner. 2018 is a special class given the amount of talent at all levels – HM, MM, LM, D2 and small colleges all have plenty of options. Here are some players who are enjoying a breakout season and are new to our rankings:
Devin Pettus (Hazel Park)
Pettus has been a huge piece for a Hazel Park team that has been one of the best in the state this season. The 5’11” guard plays with a ton of energy, toughness and heart, allowing him to play much bigger than his actual size. He can score with the best of them and has done just that, posting numerous 20 point games that have led to wins for his team.
Jalyn Benning (Pershing)
The big man has been having a stellar year for Pershing. Strong and athletic, Benning excels in games where he can use his physical tools to his advantage. He’s been a workhorse in the paint all year – from rebounding and rim protecting to scoring. He’s a true post and only stands 6’5″, so he’s obviously undersized for his position. However, given his consistent production and motor he’s a promising prospect for small colleges.
Deontae Ulmer (Henry Ford)
Ulmer has made a name for himself as one of the top shooters in Detroit this season. He’s been a key second option scoring the ball for a Henry Ford team that’s been having a successful season to this point. A pure shooter, Ulmer can hit off the catch or off the dribble. He’s capable of hitting step-backs and off-balance shots as well. One thing that Ulmer has shown me he has the ability to do consistently is hit from several feet behind the three point line, which makes him even more dangerous given this can space the floor.
Armoni Hall (East Kentwood)
Hall has been the primary big for East Kentwood this season. He’s tough and physical, which he uses to be a force in the paint. He has a good motor too, which helps him make up for lack of height – he stands around 6’5″. One thing Hall excels at is shot-blocking. He has great timing going up and getting the ball which, in combination with his above average leaping ability, helps him block shots at a high rate. He’s another forward/big type who could make an impact for small colleges.
