Prospect Spotlight: Devon Savage (2021)
In recent weeks, 2021 Devon Savage has carved out a nice role for Head Coach Patrick Behan at St. John’s. The all-around wing broke down his team’s performance after Sunday’s win at Bishop Ireton.
“Today we just wanted to come in, work together as a team, and get the W,” Savage explained. “We knew they were gonna go zone so we just tried to hit the middle, flash as much as we can, and hit the high lows as much as possible.”
Savage pulled off one of the most exciting plays of the game: a silky-smooth euro step that resulted in an easy two points. We also saw him knock down a couple of perimeter jumpers, something he thinks is considered underrated about his game.
“That’s a move I always know how to do. I just do that AAU sometimes in the summer,” Savage said of his euro-step. “I’m working more on ball-handling and getting stronger.”
Savage describes his game as very versatile. He’s a stretch wing that challenges himself to to do all things on the court.
“I like to play defense because I know a lot of players don’t like to do that,” Savage stated. “My role is to come off the bench. Have a lot of high energy. Support my team. Play defense, rebound.”
Admittedly earlier in the season, Savage didn’t deal well with criticism. He’s improved since, and has seen his game gradually progress as a result.
“I gotta take criticism well. I know I might get chewed out by the coaches but I gotta take it as a good thing,” said the 6-foot-4 freshman. “I can’t listen to the tone, I just gotta listen to the message and take it step by step.”
What can Savage bring to a college program down the road?
“High energy. A lot of defense. The ability to take and make open shots.”
