Southwestern has tons of talent with Peyton Gover, Danny Butt, Steven Fitzgerald, etc. While Cordia is led by maybe the best player in Kentucky’s 2017 class in Anthony Nelson. I think Cordia breaks through and gets a win versus a ranked team in their third try. Lions by about 5 points.
Kentucky Country Day at Christian Academy of Louisville (12/15): A rivalry game featuring two solid teams. CAL is led by senior guard Greg Frist and junior forward Parker Jones. KCD is led by senior guard Colin Ferguson and junior star point guard J.R. Mathis. I think CAL has played the tougher schedule to date and has a little more depth, Centurions win by 6 points.
Frankfort at Franklin County (12/15): Franklin County is young and hasn’t yet won a game. Frankfort is led by seniors Anthony Robinson and Malik Frank and sit at 3-1. I think Frankfort gets the win mainly because they come in with confidence and experience, I think that could be different when the teams play later in the year.
#9 Hopkinsville at University Heights (12/15): Hopkinsville plays UHA coming off their first loss to Bowling Green. There is a ton of talent in this game from freshmen James Nicholas (Hopkinsville) and Dekeyvan Tandy (UHA) to stud sophomores Jalen Johnson and Stephen Cager (Hopkinsville) and Tray Hollowell (UHA). Junior C.J. Henagan and senior Kourtney Ware are two more talented guards for Hopkinsville. I think UHA keeps it close early, but they don’t have the same depth as the Tigers and lose by double digits.
Trigg County at Madisonville-North Hopkins (12/17): Trigg County gets faces their biggest test in the young season at Madisonville-North Hopkins. Detaveon Day, Demaria Nance, Devron Triplet, K.J. Davenport and Jonta Acree can all play and make Trigg County a sleeper in the 2nd region. Madisonville-North Hopkins is led by senior guard Jaiveon Eaves and should give us an idea of how good Trigg County is. Trigg wins easily by double digits.
John Hardin at #23 North Hardin (12/17): A rivalry game with two of the best players in the 5th region. John Hardin’s Matt Miller takes on North Hardin’s Tony Jackson. North Hardin also has senior guards William Alexander and Brandon Maxwell. John Hardin is aided by sophomore wing Mickey Pearson and junior guard Devonta Guillory. I think North is better and they get the win by about 5 points.
#14 South Laurel vs. #17 Cordia (12/18): A match-up of top 25 teams featuring two of the top teams in the mountains. Cordia is led by junior star guard Anthony Nelson while South Laurel is led by the trio of sophomore Ryan Anders, junior guard Jared Grubb and senior center Caleb Taylor. South Laurel wins a close one by four points.
Campbell County at Montgomery County (12/18): Campbell got stomped last week by Holy Cross (Covington) while Montgomery County has been solid to start the year. Campbell is led by senior center Matt Wilson while senior guard Art Walker and junior forward Jerryd Jones lead Montgomery County. Campbell County will get better this season, but they’ll struggle in this one, Montgomery County by 15 points.
Barren County at Russellville (12/18): Two of the top teams in the 4th region, Russellville is led by junior do everything guard Pedro Bradshaw. Barren County is led by a trio of seniors in Wade Coomer, Gavin Driver and Nick Mabe. Barren has more depth, but something tells me Russellville pulls the upset in this one, Panthers by 4 points.
Pulaski County vs. Doss (12/19): This one should be really interesting with Pulaski County led by super consistent junior point guard Landon Powell. However, I think the size and length of Doss with guys like Kenyi Bryant, Kel’Shawn Knight-Goff, Jaylon Hall, Stephon Franklin and Cam Maddox. This game would be a lot better if Pulaski county junior forward Treyvon Sylvester was playing in this one. Doss by 12 points.
