2019 Hidden Gems Stock Risers
This next set of 5 may have not gotten the recognition or publicity like those on the 1st-3rd teams, but their play has not gone unnoticed. All 5 of these guys approach the game the right way and were important pieces on their respective teams. They will be names to keep in mind as we go through the spring and progress towards next season.
Jordan Krueger (Walton)- Krueger has quietly put together a very nice season for the Raiders. With a lot of action going through seniors Jason McKie and the McDonough brothers, Krueger has basically been a 3-point specialist this year. He is more than that, but has excelled in this role on the perimeter. He has also been asked to step up on the defensive end, guarding some of the top players in Walton’s region. Krueger can heat up quickly from the outside and is unselfish with the ball, he should be able to show more of his slashing ability this spring. His efficient, tough-minded play did not go unnoticed, earning an Honorable Mention All-Region selection. Look for him to perform well on the travel circuit.
Nick Jackson (Lovett)- Jackson, a rising football star, is no slouch on the basketball court either. It was a tough season for Lovett as a team, but Jackson really picked up his level of play with the departure of Ryan Greer. He is one of the more unique players in the area; you’ll see him bring the ball up the court one possession and then guard the opponent’s 4 or 5 man on the other end. To go with his finishing ability, Jackson displayed an effective mid-range game and solid vision this year for the Lions. He was a stat-sheet stuffer throughout the season and was recognized as an All-Region performer. Jackson will be a great leader next year because of the toughness and intensity he brings.
Eli Barry (Westminster)- Barry did not have to be a big scorer for Westminster this year, making an impact in other areas and playing an important role on the team. He makes energy plays all over the court; he’ll grab steals, loose balls, and even fly in for blocks. Barry took advantage of transition opportunities frequently this season and has good vision on the move. He is also an underrated athlete who rebounds well for his size, which was a big boost for the Wildcats. Barry can score inside and out but would rather orchestrate things for his team. It will be interesting to see what he adds to his game throughout the spring because he could definitely start to emerge as a prospect.
Lance Beck (Lovett)- Beck came into the season known as a shooter and continued to prove that, going on hot streaks throughout the year. His numbers increased significantly in 2017-18, averaging nearly 10 PPG and just over 5 RPG with tons of made 3’s. Although still not a strength of his, he was more willing to attack the basket this season, which is something he’ll need to do next year. He really stepped up as a rebounder for an undersized Lovett team and was one of the few guys who fought until the final buzzer every game. Lovett will need Beck and Jackson to carry heavy loads on both ends next season. How much those two improve will dictate the Lions’ success in 2018-19.
Davis Herndon (Riverwood)- Herndon has been consistent for the Raiders this year, providing a nice compliment alongside seniors Rudy Fitzgibbons and Christian Sutton. He has gained valuable experience playing in tough games, including scoring 12 points and making key plays in a huge win over Jackson. Herndon is a solid perimeter asset who has nice shooting ability and makes good decisions off the dribble. He has improved as a defender also and should be looking forward to the future because it will be his team next year. Riverwood has a tough matchup against Miller Grove in the first round but the Raiders have a chance to make a run in the playoffs.
