Sprayberry’s region run, Wheeler’s emotional lost. Cobb County Polls Pt. 4
The regular season came to an end about week ago before the region tournament week. Cobb County Public Schools in McEachern, Pebblebrook, and South Cobb captured their region titles. With the final polls in from the regular season, here are our #4, #8, #12, and #14 squads.
Note: Final Cobb County Public School Ranks: McEachern, Pebblebrook, South Cobb, Wheeler, Kennesaw Mountain, Campbell, Pope, Sprayberry, North Cobb, Allatoona, Walton, Kell, Hillgrove, Harrison, Marietta, Lassiter, Osborne.
#4 Wheeler High School (Marietta, GA) – 17-10
No pressure for the new HC at Wheeler in head coach Coach Thompson. Thompson is in his first year at Wheeler High School after leading Greenforest Christian to back to back state championships the previous years. The Wildcats finished 2nd in Region 2 class 7A and were just seconds away from capturing the region title. We all have heard of 2018 center EJ Montgomery’s incredible senior season and being named a 2018 McDonald’s All American. Roy Williams of UNC Chapel Hill and John Calapari of Kentucky have recently took a visit to Wheeler High School to get a look at the senior center. Wheeler took a big blow a few weeks ago as they lost their second leading scorer and one of Cobb’s top shooters in 2019 shooting guard Isaac Martin due to a knee injury. Martin will be out for the season. Wheeler will host Lowndes in their first round game in the class 7A state tournament. The Wildcats have a strong possibility to meet Newton High School, who features top ranked 2019 point guard and UGA commit Ashton Hagans, in the elite 8.
#8 Sprayberry High School (Marietta, GA) 17-11
What a season it has been for the Sprayberry Yellow Jackets. Sprayberry went on a run in the Region 6 class 6A region tournament and playing 4 games in 6 days. The Yellow Jackets defeated River Ridge and Dalton in the first two rounds and had an incredible upset win over the #1 seeded Creekview last Friday night. Sprayberry then faced the #2 seeded South Cobb High School and almost came close to capture their first region championship since 2013 but fell short losing 52-49. The Jackets still made thier first state tournament appearance since 2016 and will host a very good Alexander team this Friday night, which should be a very interesting matchup. Seniors in 2018 guard Micah McCuen and 2018 wing and Idaho commit Khadim Samb made all region honors and All Cobb County honorable mentions list.
#12 Kell High School (Marietta, GA) – 13-13
Unfortunately Kell’s season ended early this year with a lost to Paulding County in the first round of the Region 7 5A region tournament. Paulding County hits a game winning shot to defeat the Longhorns 67-66. We have to give credit to the senior backcourt of 2018 point guard Jahwan Smith and 2018 guard Sayvon Delgado. Smith and Delgado carried a heavy load this season with 2019 guard CJ Henderson out for the season. Jahwan Smith and Sayvon Delgado was recently named to their all region teams and also were put on the All Cobb County honorable mentions list. The Longhorns may bounce back next season with Henderson, 2019 wing Justin Perry, and 2019 guard Cameron Lockett all returning and along with a couple key 2021 players.
#14 Harrison High School (Kennesaw, GA) – 7-18
The Hoyas season ended in the first round of the Region 6 class 6A region tournament once again. Harrison was defeated by Sequoyah last Monday night 66-59. 2018 guard Jack Brunswick was recently named on the all region team for Region 6 class 6A. There is a superstar in the making in 2021 guard Bobby Moore. Moore has excellent upside and will improve his game as the years go by and his experience with varsity on the court. Bobby is a 6’4 combo guard who has a body type of a linebacker, which helps his skills to get to the rim.
