Drew Weikert Recruiting Update (2018)
MBA Big Red (18-6, 7-5) struggled in the last month, only winning half of their games since MLK Day.
For a team anchored by reliable, even prolific seniors (Thomas Carr, Drew Weikert, Will Nutter, Alexander Roberts) the recent results don’t quite match the aspirations. The 13 wins in the season’s first 14 games lines up better with what Head Coach Kevin Anglin’s men devised for the 2017-2018 season.
The Big Red struggled all season to capture road region wins, but knocking off Father Ryan 53-50 squared up their regional away record at 3-3. All that remains in the regular season is a daunting road contest Friday at Brentwood Academy.
Surely playoff success is the priority, but expanding to the bigger picture of college and life after high school @PrepHoopsTN and Drew Weikert engaged in a postgame discussion.
“Rhodes in Memphis offered me a roster spot,” said Weikert.
The Lynx of Rhodes College currently run out 15 guards, 13 of which ostensibly will return next season. Two key guards are graduating, but the DIII program clearly prioritizes guards and/or finds them easier to target in the recruiting cycles.
Centre College (KY) is also pursuing the basketball services of Drew Weikert. He recently visited the Danville campus.
“They are my top choice,” said Weikert.
The starting guard also scheduled a visit to Washington and Lee, which was either postponed or canceled. Weikert is also considering Sewanee The University of the South.
What can Drew give to a college program?
Facing a likely future-DII lead guard in J.C. Clausi, Drew Weikert scored 21 points (10-10 FT’s). Much of the game revealed his value to the team.
Weikert handles the lion’s share of ball-handling duties. Weikert doesn’t only limit turnovers, but he also provides scoring. The point guard is careful, but creative. He appears to welcome defenders and quickly slip a pass to the dangerously-placed teammate.

In two frighteningly tense moments at Father Ryan Weikert crisply delivered a perfect pass to Thomas Carr each time. You can see the first cross court pass at 0:35. Weikert drove ardently into the heart of the defense and flawlessly fed Carr in the corner. The bottom of the net felt Carr’s wrath.
After the video, but before the final minute of the game elapsed, Drew Weikert took live action instruction from Head Coach Anglin. Within seconds Weikert initiated the action. With his first step and determination intermingling, Weikert dashed along the side of the lane. Instantly two defenders collapsed to help. Somehow volume scorer, Carr rotated to the open chasm vacated by Weikert. Drew made the blind pass backwards to a wide-open Carr.
Thomas again flipped it home, this time collecting a shooting foul in the process.
The four-point play completed, MBA managed to capture the key win.
Thomas Carr was dutifully mobbed by teammates after the win, but two times late Weikert made the perfect play perfect with his execution.
That is what he can offer a college coach.
