Recruiting Report: Zach Martinek (2019)
If it’s versatility you’re looking for, then West Fork’s 6-foot-4 guard Zach Martinek might be your guy.
There’s already been two college programs that have been pursuant of the big junior guard with a diverse set of skills.
“Wartburg has contacted me a little bit, and Briar Cliff. But, ya, this summer is a big summer for me; I’ve had a goal for a while now to play college basketball and I don’t know where that will be, but I know I could get a lot of exposure this summer,” said Martinek.
He played up with Iowa Prep 17U last summer, and that better prepared him for his junior season with the Warhawks. He’ll be a wily vet as soon as he steps on the floor with Iowa Prep 17U this spring.
“I played 17U last year, I played up, and I think that helped me a lot playing with older and bigger guys,” said Martinek. “I’m looking forward to playing again with them.”
It’s Martinek’s wide-range of skills that have allowed him to have so much success this season. And he’s worked hard to sharpen his guard skills over the past year.
“I’ve been working on shooting and trying to create for myself. My shot has improved a lot since last year, and opponents have to come out and guard me now, which opens up a lot of driving lanes,” said Martinek, who says he’ll likely play the one and two in college.
“At 1A it’s tough to tell my position because 6’4 is pretty big, and at the next level, I’ll be more of a guard and definitely not a post. I’d say I’ll probably end up being a one or a two at the next level.”
Zach Martinek is ranked by Prep Hoops as a top 75 prospect in his class.
The Warhawks are getting ready to play their district semifinal, and Martinek — a top-50 prospect in Iowa’s 2019 class — has been key to the team’s success. He averaged 18.2 points on 50 percent shooting, 2,4 assists, 2.1 steals, and 5.9 rebounds per game during the regular season.
And after their post-season run is complete, it will be his 17U season that will become the main focus.
“In small-town little 1A basketball, you don’t really get a lot of exposure,” said Martinek. “We’re going to be at a lot of tournaments (with Iowa Prep), where there will be coaches from big and small schools,” said Martinek. “So, I’m excited to get going with that. But, we still got some work to do with the high school season.”
