Colorado’s Most Recent 1000 Point Club
There’s a prestigious club that not many players get invited to in their careers and is only open to a select few as reaching 1,000 points in a high school basketball career is a benchmark every top scorer hopes to achieve. It’s no easy task.
Yet, with only a couple weeks until the state playoffs, we have recently had a few players accomplish that task during the 2017-18 season.
Below is a look at those hoopsters that have reached the magic number.
Te’rae “Trey” Johnson- Vista Ridge
When you talk about a player that gets buckets, Trey’s name has to be mentioned. On the season he’s averaging 18.1 points a game and that’s not the craziest part. The craziest part is, in the 20 games he’s played this year, every single one of them he’s scored in double figures. Vista Ridge struggled to start off the year, but, due to the strong play from Trey are a team that’s won 7 of the last 8 games and are looking to finish off strong to make the playoffs and surprise a team or two. He’s been very consistent throughout his career and will go down as one of the best Vista Ridge has ever produced.
Kenny Foster- Smoky Hill
Not many players in the state have the resume that Kenny has and in his sophomore season he’s already reached the goal that many scorers wish to accomplish. He’s a 1000 point scorer that’s seemed to have found his rhythm again as he’s scored 15+ in ten straight games and he has maybe the highest ceiling out of anyone in his class. He can shoot the ball, finish amongst the trees, dribble, penetrate and kick and has the playmaking ability to set up others. He’s a huge reason for the Buffaloes turnaround from a season ago and when he’s on, there aren’t many around the state that can stop him. He’s a tireless worker that gets it done both on the court and in the classroom and is one of those players that you have to get out and go see before he graduates. At this pace, he can go down as one of the top scorers in Smoky Hill history and he’ll surely try everything in his power to get there.
Kam Vincel- Prarieview
There are players that are good and there are players that completely take over a game. Kam has the capability to take over as we’ve seen plenty of times before. He’s one of only the only players in the state that not only has hit the 1000 point mark, but has also averaged a double-double since his sophomore season. In his senior season, he’s currently sitting at 20.7 points a game and 11.9 rebounds a game while often times being double-teamed and part of the opposite team’s game plan. At 6’3 he’s a do it all player that has shown progression throughout his high school career and has the numbers to back him up. He’ll definitely be playing college ball and is using this last year to work on plenty of areas to prepare for the next level.
Hunter Shkapich-Valor Christian
Hunter is a junior that not only has gotten it done in Colorado, but between his career in CO and also California, there have been plenty of baskets to go around. Through 20 games he’s averaging 14.4 points a game and a key contributor to a talent Valor Christian Squad that won the state championship last year. He’s come into the organization and fit in seamlessly and has been one of the interesting players to watch in the state. He’s a 6’0 guard that gets it done in a variety of ways and it’ll be interesting to see his growth throughout his playing career as I’m sure we haven’t seen the best from Hunter—which is scary.
Kevin Jiminez- Northglenn
To say that Kevin has been the bread and butter for Northglenn is an understatement. He’s the leader on a very young squad as he’s one of the only seniors on the team and going out his last year with a bang. He’s the leading scorer and rebounder for the Norsemen at 20.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game and is the first boys’ basketball player in school history to score 1000 points. He’s the school’s new all-time leading scorer and is an interesting prospect that a D2/D3 school will be lucky to have.
