Prospect Spotlight: Jake Hull (2020)
Although his Grinnell team has struggled this season, sophomore small forward Jake Hull has certainly been a bright spot.
The 6-foot-2 wing is averaging 13.4 points per game for the Tigers, and leading them with 6.7 rebounds per game.
“I think some of my strengths are attacking the hoop and going up strong. I’ve had a lot of success with that this season and I’m trying to improve finding ways to get to the line more,” said Hull.
“My 3-point shot has been off this season, so I’ve had to improvise and score driving to the hoop. I’m definitely going to work continue to try and improve my 3-point shot.”
Grinnell has won just one a game this season, but Hull has remained positive through the experience. He says he and his team have seen improvement since the start of the season.
“My sophomore season has been good. Despite our record, I think we as a team, and also myself, have improved greatly over the season. My role is to score on the team, along with senior Ethan Mitchell. It’s really great having teammates such as Ethan Mitchell, Jayden Gibson, and Nick Popp to find me open with great passes,” said Hull.
“Overall this season, I feel like I’ve been doing well and will continue to work hard to make myself better than I was before.”
Also a standout on the diamond, Hull says he likes basketball better, and hoops is what he’d like to pursue at the next level.
“I prefer basketball in college. I love baseball but basketball has been my favorite sport through the years growing up and I enjoy it every time I’m out there,” said Hull, who says he’ll try and squeeze some grassroots ball in this spring and summer.
“I think I might try to fit some AAU basketball up in Ames with All Iowa Attack. We will see when the time comes a little closer to that decision.”
The ultimate goal, like for so many of his peers: to get his college paid for, by playing a sport he loves.
“I would love to play Division I basketball,” said Hull. “But my goal is to get most of my college paid for and to play the sport I love.”
