Observations on Lakewood St. Ed’s talented trio of sophomores
A trio of sophomores in the class of 2020 from St. Edward continue to develop and attract the attention of college coaches.
Grant Huffman, Devontae Blanton, and Montorie Foster are ranked among the top 20 players in Ohio the Class of 2019 by prephoops.com and all showed over the weekend in a pair of St. Edward wins why they are so highly touted.
The Eagles picked up a road win over Villa Angela-St. Joseph on Jan. 27 and less than 24 hours later ran an athletic Cleveland Heights team out the steamy gym at the Dunk 4 Diabetes Shootout.
St. Ed’s actually trailed by five entering the fourth quarter of the VASJ game but blitzed the Vikings for 39 fourth-quarter points.
The 6’4” Huffman scored 24 points in the win over Cleveland Heights. He was continually able to work himself inside to score, displaying good body control. He connected on some perimeter shots, but his jump shot is a little funky…but it does go in. He appears to be rounding back into shape after breaking an ankle earlier this season. He is getting looks from high and mid-major schools.
Blanton, a 6’6” forward, continues to develop his offensive game. He’s pass-first at this point, according to his coach Sean Flannery, and needs to become more aggressive. Has a nice mid-range game, and did knock down some 3s in the two wins. Strong inside.
“He’s going to be a solid player at whatever level he plays at, wherever he plays at,” said one Division I coach on hand to scout the Dunk 4 Diabetes.
“I’m a pass-first guy, but I like to score it. I’m a midrange player who can get to the basket,” said Blanton, when asked to describe his game. “I’m always trying to get on the boards and help my team win.”
Foster is a smooth 6’1” guard. He moves effortlessly on the court, gets good elevation on his jumper and has a nice high release. He displays outstanding body control in the paint and can finish after contact. He scored vs. VASJ and 10 vs. Heights for St. Ed.
Another Eagle who flashed was 6’8” senior Emmett Chambers (2018), on both the offensive end, showing some nice moves and finishes inside, nice range and form on his jump shot and ability to rebound be a force defensively with his length. He scored 12 in the win over VASJ and five against Cleveland Heights.
