A versatile 5-foot-10 point guard, Audubon junior Tate Killeen is doing a lot of everything for the Wheelers this winter.
He can pass, shoot, rebound and play defense. We recently caught up with the do-it-all guard, and he explained his skill-set in his own words.
“My strengths are that I like to impact the game in any way I can. I like to rebound, I try and put a big emphasis on that this season, and I’ve definitely stepped that up. I also like to score a lot and pass a lot,” said Killeen.
He’s averaging 16.7 points, 3.5 assists, 2.3 steals and 7.2 rebounds per game this season, all team-bests.
“We’ve kind of struggled a little bit, we have a very tough conference and losing Tyler Riebhoff (shoulder surgery) has made a big difference for us. We have some underclassmen that are stepping up big-time, and we expect them to have a big role next year,” said Killeen.
“Since Tyler’s been out I’ve been stepping up a lot more. But my 3-point percentage could be a little higher. I’m not used to how tight team’s have been guarding me. But slowly, I’m getting a lot better.”
Though Killeen has never played grassroots ball, he says this summer, there’s a chance he will.
“I have one group, Tryon Gym, that’s been reaching out to me. I’m getting that set up and hopefully I can play with them this summer,” said Killeen.
“I’ve never really had the opportunity to do that until now, so I’m going to try and make the most of it.”
If he does end up with Tryon Gym 17U, small colleges could start to take notice of Killeen this summer.
“I haven’t had any schools reach out to me, but that would be my biggest goal this summer,” said Killeen. “To get a lot more schools on me, and hopefully get a lot of opportunities to play basketball after high school.”
