Prospect Spotlight: Tre Gilliam (2020)
Tre Gilliam is just a sophomore, but he has the mindset of a floor general, already.
After handling Pinellas Park 77-63, last week, Gilliam admitted that he’s been working on every part of his leadership skills as he can.
“I’m being more of a coach on the court, being vocal with my coach, and making sure everyone on the team knows what’s going on,” Gilliam said.
And he definitely knows what’s going on as far as defense is concerned.
On D, he can come away with steals, easily. He’s a very pesky defender on the perimeter. From the foul line, Gilliam went 8-of-12, he knows how to penetrate and draw contact.
Fourteen of his 23 total points came in the second half, and all but three came through aggressively attacking the paint. In-transition, Gilliam is great at making the correct pass to his most-open teammate.
“My main goal was to get my teammates involved and get us going, early,” Gilliam said. He later voiced that he knew good things would come for him and his squad because they’re all on the same page. Gilliam believes they’re playing great together, right now.
From an individual lens, Gilliam said he’s been working on his midrange shot, passing ability, and his IQ. All three appeared to be in play, on that night.
When all three are clicking, it’s easy for him to be a leader—regardless of his age.
“It is what it is. Being a sophomore has nothing to do with it,” Gilliam said. “If I have to lead my team, then that’s what I’m going to do.”
