Recruiting Report: Zack Lasek (2020)
One of the state’s best big-men is still somewhat of a secret, and though some light recruitment has come in for big, bouncy and versatile sophomore Zack Lasek, he’s still a bit under the radar.
Lasek, a 6-foot-7 power forward from Highland, Riverside, was selected as our Freshman of the Year last season. And spent his spring and summer playing with Martin Brothers 15U, it was his first-ever grassroots season.
Some light recruitment in the form of letters and inquiries have come in, but that’s it so far.
“In early August, I got some letters from Iowa, Nebraska and Central Michigan. And I’ve also had some interest from UNI. Since then, I haven’t really seen too much or heard from those schools at all,” said Lasek.
“Hopefully that will pick up this AAU season, when I’m playing in all the tournaments in front of the coaches.”
With a big frame and plenty of bounce, Lasek is able to rattle rims with the best of them, and established himself as a dominant post early in his high school career. Now, he’s working to make himself a more versatile stretch-four.
“During last June when there was no AAU ball going on, I really tried to develop a mid-range, and after I got that established and that was working for me I tried to move it out to the 3-point line,” said Lasek. “And I’ve found a nice rhythm with my 3-point shot, and that’s been something I’ve been trying to utilize.”
After averaging 15.3 points on 61 percent shooting and 7.1 rebounds per game as a freshman, Lasek has improved as a sophomore. He’s going for 19.9 points and 8.1 rebounds so far this season for the Huskies.
“As a team, we’ve had some good games and some not so good games. And individually, I’ve been doing pretty well, but not as well I’d like. My shooting was pretty hot, but the last few games I haven’t been shooting it too well,” said Lasek.
“One thing I want to get better at before the end of the season is my perimeter play. I just want to get more consistent with it, that way when I’m being double-teamed in the post, I can find a lot more looks out on the perimeter.”
Just as soon as his sophomore season is complete, Lasek is looking forward to his important 16U campaign with Martin Brothers.
“This AAU season is going to be huge for me because I have a lot of new things I’ve added to my game. And it’s one thing to do it during the high school season, but it’s a another while thing to do it against the competition you see in AAU,” said Lasek.
“Last year was my first full season of AAU, so I’ll be a lot more ready this season. I’d like to be more productive in terms of my offensive output in AAU.”
