Prospect Spotlight: Brett Givens (2018)
It’s been a big step up in production from last season to this season for Lisbon’s 5-foot-7 guard Brett Givens.
After a solid junior season, he’s having himself a fantastic senior season. Very few in Iowa are playing better.
The talented scoring point-guard says it’s his ability to handle the rock, and the work he put in this offseason on his jumper that has contributed to his success.
“My main goal on the court is ball-handling, I deal with all the pressure and everything, so that’s what I mainly try and do. And ever since I’ve gotten better at that I’ve been able to get my own shot off and everything that helps me continue to score,” said Givens.
“Our team has been playing really well. And, myself, I’m shooting it really well, especially from the 3-point line. I worked a ton on my 3-point shot over the offseason, and it’s really helped a lot.”
Givens has helped Lisbon to an 11-4 mark so far this season, and is averaging 20.7 points per game. He’s doing so while shooting it efficiently; 50 percent from the floor and 48 percent from deep.
The senior guard is also leading the team in assists and steals to boot.
Still, Givens — also a baseball standout — says no recruitment has come in yet. He thinks maybe his height has something to do with that.
“Actually basketball is my favorite sport and if I had a chance to play at the next level, I probably would. Baseball, I’m pretty good at it, but I don’t have that love of the game like I do for basketball,” said Givens.
“And I don’t know where I want to go to school yet, for a D3 it would obviously have to be the right fit. And it’d probably have to be somewhere around Iowa.”
All he’s hoping for is a chance to prove what he can do on the hardwood.
“I actually haven’t had any interest, and that kid of is surprising to me. I’m sure a lot of people see that I’m 5’7 and think I’ll be too small to play in college,” said Givens. “But if they came and watched me, I’m sure I could prove them wrong.”
