Class of 2020 Top Wings
Time to breakdown the best wings in the 2020 class. What shooting guards and small forwards make the cut?
SF Lamontay Daughtery (DuQuoin)
Current Ranking: #3
Travel Team: Brad Beal Elite
The Duquoin 6’6” small forward has a great frame and tremendous athletic ability. The two biggest areas we have seen growth are his perimeter skill set and confidence. He shoots it from a low release point, but gets it off clean most of the time and consistently knocked them down pulling up from both mid-range and three. You combine that with his freakish athleticism in the open floor taking defenders off the bounce and that makes him a problem for defenders to stop. He is playing with a much higher motor than we have seen in the past. That is seen on the offensive glass where he regularly gets second chance points with his explosive quick twitched jumping. Even flashes a few post moves including a right handed hook. Defensively he has a chance to be effective with his physical tools, but he will have to play with a higher desire on that end. Daughtery will also need to get stronger as his career progresses. There is a lot of talent in there if he can max it all out he is a high-major prospect.
SF Isaiah Rivera (Geneseo)
Current Ranking: #4
Travel Team: Quad City Elite
The 6’4” sophomore is a strong wing that still has some room to grow vertically. He showed off his complete offensive repertoire last summer, this fall, and continues doing it during the high school season. His offensive skill set is at another level compared to others on the floor. As a scorer he can beat you with a feathery jumper from the perimeter, but if you get up too tight he will take it to the rack. Smooth acceleration off the bounce and finishes through contact. Playmaker with the ball in the open floor as he can finish himself taking it all the way for a dunk or finding teammates. Excellent getting others involved with his passing making some insane dishes. Rebounds well for his position. Impressed with the growth he has made on the defensive end of the floor. Rivera isn’t the quickest on the defensive end, but uses positioning and active hands to make plays. Rivera is a player high-majors and mid-major plus schools need to get on ASAP!
SF Jayden Johnson (Batavia)
Current Ranking: #7
Travel Team: Fundamental U
Johnson has been a favorite of ours since we saw him back in July where he put himself on our radar and then backed it up in the fall at the PrepHoopsIllinois Camp. The sophomore stands at 6’5” with a strong body. He is a crafty and skilled scorer. Johnson has a feathery perimeter jump shot from three especially off the catch. He plays with a high IQ and doesn’t force bad shots. Not the most explosive athlete at this stage he just knows how to get to the rim with crafty drives and using his strength to finish or get to the line. Mid-major prospect at this stage.
SF Demarius Splunge (Orr)
Current Ranking: #9
Travel Team: Mac Irvin Fire
This explosive and big wing was held out for the first half of the season after to transferring over to Orr. Look for him to help out a senior laden group off the bench in the second half of the season. Splunge is a 6’6” small forward that emerged with his play late in July and this fall at various camps including the PrepHoops and Pangos camps. He is a jumbo wing with size, strength, and athleticism. Tough cover when he is attacking on straight line drives to the hoop which he loves to do. Jumper is best from mid-range and streaky from three. Rebounds at a very high level and can take it off the glass and go the other way. When we first saw him we thought he was more of a ball dominant player that was just looking for his shots, but at the Pangos camp he displayed more passing feel than we had seen in the past. He already has multiple D1 offers on the table.
SG Dante Maddox (Bloom)
Current Ranking: #14
Travel Team: All-In
Maddox is a 6’2” 2020 shooting guard from Bloom that is an athletic and can score the basketball. His athleticism shows through in the transition game where he gets out as a finisher with big dunks. He is a quality scorer in the half court as well with range on his shot out to beyond the three point arc. Clean looking stroke. He can get on hot shooting barrages from three. At times he takes some forced shots from deep. Should be on mid-major and low-major radars.
SG Keshawn Williams (Bloom)
Current Ranking: #15
Travel Team: Young & Reckless
This 6’1” shooting guard is a slashing scorer that loves to get to the rim. He is a super athlete that makes plays in transition and finishes at the rim with acrobatics. Speed and burst on first step is impressive. Also an active defender with his quick hands. At times he can be a bit of a volume scorer. He shows flashes of combo guard skills with his passing. Williams is a low-major target with the chance to move into mid-major discussions.
SG Ramean Hinton (Curie)
Current Ranking: #16
Travel Team: All-In
Hinton is a kid that is intriguing to us. He broke out in July with All-In with how competitive he is along with his athleticism and toughness. The 6’3” sophomore shooting guard only plays limited minutes for Curie, but definitely flashes D1 ability when he is on the floor. Capable spot up three point shooter. Gets offensive rebound put backs and to the charity stripe at a nice clip. Hinton is definitely one of those prospects in the sophomore class that has a lot of upside and is just scratching the surface of his potential long term.
SF Nate Santos (Geneva)
Current Ranking: #25
Travel Team:
The 6’6” wing is the younger brother of Mizzou wing KJ Santos. Nate has some of the similar tools that his brother showed with his size for position and length. Can also shoot it from the perimeter. Smooth looking shot from beyond the arc. Santos shows he can handle it some as well using a shot fake and blowing by his man. Lots of upside here and should be monitored by D1 programs!
SG Josh Holmes (Jones)
Current Ranking: #30
Travel Team: Young & Reckless
The 6’0” 2020 prospect just has a knack for getting buckets. He is a sound perimeter shooter with a clean looking stroke from three. Also had a nice shot fake where he lets his man fly by and then drilled a pull up jumper. Holmes will either need to grow or develop point guard skills to become a D1 player, but early in the process he is worth monitoring. He is having a stellar sophomore campaign for Jones, but is under the radar because it isn’t a traditional basketball power.
