Prospect Spotlight: 2018 Jared Williams (Roosevelt)
EASTVALE, CA.— Head Coach Steve Singleton who has the Roosevelt basketball program humming out in the Inland Empire. Singleton was an assistant coaches during the those seasons when the Dominguez Dons out of Compton were dominating the Southern California basketball season when they had the likes of NBA standouts Tyson Chandler and Tayshaun Prince. Well it looks like Singleton is reincarnating that style of hard-nose defense and relentless pressure just fine at his new location.
Despite losing Division 1 recruits Mathew Mitchell and Jemarl Baker, Singleton has done a nice job adapting to those significant personnel losses—and it starts with senior Jared Williams.
“Coach Singleton is a player’s coach. That’s what I love about him,” explains Williams.
The 6-foot-6 versatile 4-man has been a menace to deal with for opposing teams due to his length, bounce, and instincts. A typical game for Williams would be multiple conversions in the paint, consistent rim protection, and a ton of moxie exerted at both ends of the floor.
Williams has the length, bounce, and moxie to make an impact at both ends of the floor.“I would say both scoring and defending the paint area are my strongest skills I bring to the game on a nightly basis,” notes Williams.
Williams, at this stage of his young career, would best be described as a “tweener” in terms of college potential at the Division 1 level. He is not quite big enough to enforce his will in the paint area at the D1 level and doesn’t quite have perimeter skill set to be a 3-man, just yet.
“I need to improve my guard skills, specifically my ball handling and shooting to take my game to another level,” notes Williams.
At this stage Williams has some DIII and NAIA’s checking in on him and his progress. He has the academics (3.6 gpa) and an open mind to play anywhere at any time. With his engaging personality, leadership qualities, and blossoming talent, it should come as no surprises when he is making a significant impact no matter what college he ends up at next fall.
