Class of 2019 PG Stock Risers
We start our examination of the junior class by taking a look at the 2019 point guards that have helped elevate their stock the most this season.
Chris Roberts (Lincoln Park)
Previous Ranking: #23
Current Ranking: #16
Roberts has been a huge reason for the success that Lincoln Park has seen in the first half of the season. The explosive point guard gets to the rim with speed and burst. We saw him be very impressive over the summer with Young & Reckless with his ability to beat defenders off the dribble and get to the cup. He has continued that this year looking dominant at times. Definitely needs to round out his game as a distributor, but there is a lot to like about Roberts as a potential mid-major to low-major point guard.
Marquise Walker (Curie)
Previous Ranking: #20
Current Ranking: #17
Walker has been one of the more hyped prospects in this class for a while. A lot of the concerns popped up last year at St. Joseph’s with his attitude, not taking to coaching, and being too ball dominant. He has made major strides as a junior after transferring to Curie in several of those areas. Walker has better shot selection and his passing has greatly improved. He is starting to play within a team concept and that has elevated his stock. Like the progress we have seen in the first half of the season and hope he can continue it through the rest of his junior season. Low-major and mid-majors should be monitoring him.
Trey Boston (Downers Grove North)
Previous Ranking: #193
Current Ranking: #44
Boston stands at 6’0” and is a quality scoring combo guard. He has a burst with his initial first step with the ball in his hands. Consistently gets to the rim where he is able to finish with either hand. Makes a few nice passes in the half court. D2/Low-major prospect to track.
Semaj Henderson (Downers Grove North)
Previous Ranking: #151
Current Ranking: #45
Henderson is a 6’1” point guard that has good strength. The junior is more of a scoring point guard at this stage. Henderson is at his best scoring in transition where he can get a head of steam behind him and get to the rim. Also a powerful slasher getting to the basket. At times he can be a bit wild and take some unforced shots. Low-major/D2 prospect.
Malik Tidwell (Marian Catholic)
Previous Ranking: #73
Current Ranking: #62
Tidwell is a 5’9” combo guard that is mostly known for his scoring. The strong and compact guard can shoot the rock from three especially off the catch. Finishes with strength through contact at the rim. He can grab a defensive board, go the length of the floor, and convert at the rim. Tidwell has impressed us most with the growth in his passing this season. Best we have seen out of him in that aspect as he showed more point guard skills than we had seen in the past. D2 prospect at this stage.
Fred Cleveland (Leo)
Previous Ranking: #90
Current Ranking: #64
Cleveland might not be the biggest player, but he plays with a lot of heart and has some game to back it up. He is a slick handling lead guard that is quick and shifty with the ball in his hands. Has it on a string at times. Gets dribble penetration in the lane consistently. He shoots it pretty well from deep. Takes a bit of a long release which will be a concern at the next level. Pushes it in the open floor with his speed and has court vision to make both the flashy and simple passes. He has posted quality numbers at his new school Leo this year. D2 programs should take a serious look at Cleveland. Bumped up almost 30 spots since last ranking.
