Prospect Watch: Ozzie Meiborg (2020)
We recently caught Cedar Rapids Jefferson guard Ozzie Meiborg when his J-Hawks made a trip to West Des Moines to play Valley, and he was sensational.
His team may not have gotten the win against a loaded Valley unit, but the 5-foot-11 combo-guard notched a game-high 22 points in the narrow loss.
Meiborg — Iowa’s 35th-ranked 2020 — certainly proved his ranking that day.
“Scoring-wise this year, I haven’t shot well from beyond the arc, but other than that I think I’ve been shooting good. My mid-range has been working for me, and I’ve developed a floater that’s been working really well,” said Meiborg.
“I’m still needing to work on strength and athletic ability, that’s where I’m lacking the most right now. Especially in the MVC, where guys can jump out of the gym and are super strong and athletic, I really want to work to be right there with those guys.”
His J-Hawks are 3-6, but despite the losing record, Meiborg is pleased with the progress of the team.
“Our record is not where we want it to be, but we feel good about where we are at as a team,” he said.
In just a few months, Meiborg, who is averaging 12.8 points per game this season as a sophomore, will start his 16U season with the Iowa Mavericks’ top squad.
And it’s then when he’s hoping, and expecting his recruitment to start and spike.
“Everyone wants to play Division I basketball, and that’s one my top goals as a basketball player, but any interest right now, just to start it off, I’d be happy with it,” said Meiborg.
“I’m hoping and expecting a little bit of a spike with that this summer, especially playing with the Mavs. We’re going to be good and I’ll be able to be one of the main guys, so that will really help with getting noticed.”
