Recruiting Report: Sam Olson (2018)
Rocori shooting guard Sam Olson has a touch that has grabbed the attention of college programs. Olson is leading the Spartans in scoring half way though this season.
“Things were off to a slow start for the team this season, but we picked it up after the first two games and have been in every game since,” Sam said. “There were only two guys that really had some varsity experience, so it took a couple people some time to get used to playing at the varsity level.
“Personally the season is going well, I believe I’m averaging about 15 points a game. It’s getting better as the season is going on. We lost our starting four from last year along with a few other seniors.
“We are still building to where we need be, but we are working hard to get back where we were last year in the section finals. I have no doubt in my mind that if we work together we should be in that position again.”
At 6-foot-2 Olson is also gabbing 5.6 rebounds a game, dishing out 2.5 assists, and he’s doing more with the dribble.
“I’m attacking the hoop more and creating my own shots, everyone knows I shoot the ball so it’s necessary for me to be able to take the ball to the hoop,” Olson said. “I feel like I’m passing the ball better, getting a lot more assists than I usually have in the past.”
Olson wants to reach a similar personal milestone to what most other high school players want, that goal of a grand.
“Personally I want to score 1,000 points in my high school career,” Olson said. “I’m on pace if I can keep my average up, I also just want to continue to grow as a players and understand the game more and more everyday. The team goal is to be where we were last year in the section finals.”
Olson is hearing from schools in the MIAC, the UMAC, NAIA, and junior college level.
“I have interest from numerous division three colleges such as St. John’s, Concordia Moorhead, Hamline, Bethany Lutheran, Valley City State, Jamestown and a couple junior colleges such as Ridgewater and also Brainerd Central Lakes.”
