2020 Class Rankings Breakdown: New Top 5, Risers, Sleepers and more
With the 2020 class rankings released last year in the fall, there has been plenty of movement around the state of Washington. Players are stepping up and delivering huge game performances to increase there stock. There are some dynamic duo’s emerging along with some teams who some might call, “stacked.” I’ve seen some close games between teams with records not even closely matched. I’ve seen some dunk of the year candidates along with some point guards who have increased there juice when handling the ball. There is a rise in talent this year and there is a rise in underclassmen who are really liking the bright lights and are performing against some of the best team in the state of Washington.
Below is a break down of four categories, “a new top 5,” “sleepers,” “players to watch,” and more. This a is a time to give those players some more shine and have there names mentioned. I believe that when you prove yourself that says a lot about your character, dedication and work ethic. Those guys are deserving to have there names on the board.
A NEW TOP 5:
Maui Sze – Roosevelt, 5’10 Sze is a special talent. He has a great feel for the game and is very confident with his game overall. He shows quality leadership and uses on ball screens well. He has deep range from behind the arc, which puts pressure on defenders. He should lead Roosevelt to some wins this season.
Ryan Moffet – Odessa, 5’10 Moffet is coming off a huge freshman season, after averaging 28.8 points for Odessa. He looks to match that effort this season, with more experience and confidence. He has been working hard this off season and should turn a lot more heads with his high level scoring ability.
Jabe Mullins – Mt. Si, 6’4 Mullins can pretty much do it all for his team. He is a solid combo guard, that plays at a nice pace. He does a really good job at getting other involved and making sure his team is under control. He has a nice release on his jump shot, shooting pretty consistent. He is a nice floor general and can control the game.
Peter Erickson – Enumclaw High School. Currently Peter projects to be a D1 recruit with tremendous upside. He is very long, smooth and has the ability to get his shot off at will. He works out consistently with the FOH trainers. While Peter has shown the ability to drain perimeter shots, he also stated there are other aspect of his game he is working on. “I am working very hard on my long range shooting on and off the dribble as well as my ball-handling. We go thru an array of drills and I am making very good progress with the coaching staff. We have team workouts which are very intense and we have some excellent players to go against.”
Marjon Beauchamp, 6’4, SG – Nathan Hale H.S. Beauchamp is coming off a terrific grassroots season, as he put on shows at each tournament, leading Team Bradley to wins. His game is growing by the day and he continues to pick up big time offers. His game reminds me of a younger Marvin Williams. He can shoot, defend and handle the ball. His versatility will be very useful for one of these top programs. I’m sure most hope he decides to stay in the pac 12.
RISERS:
Jalen Scott – Bellarmine Prep, 5’11. Scott is a smooth guard, always playing under control and making the right plays for his team. He has a nice touch on his shot, with a smooth pull up. He works pretty hard on both sides of the ball, being vocal on the defensive end. Scott plays with a lot of passion and continues to impress, he should be picking up some looks this season.
Jabe Mullins – Mount Si. Mullins is averaging 13.8 points per game for Mount Si. He continues to take his game to the next level and has played some solid basketball this season. He has a quick release on his jump shot and can really get it going behind the arc. He should continue trending up.
Mutdung Bol, 6’2, SG – Currently, Bol came off the bench last season and provided a spark for the Warriors and he’s done just that. Bol is a lanky 6’2, with extremely long arms and legs. But he’s also very smooth and has good ball handling skills for such a young and lanky player. He even has a bit of touch on his shot that always looks nice coming out of his hands. You can tell this young man still has a lot of growing to do. He’s got such long arms and long body it looks as if he will get to a solid 6’8 before he’s done growing.
SLEEPERS:
Tyler Patterson – is a talented all-around guard with a good set of fundamentals and a skill set to match. He handles the ball well and knows how to create space for himself on the dribble. He uses the ball fake very effectively to create offense and he has 3-point range to boot. An excellent athlete who was one of the most explosive players at the event. He is a strong and slashing wing player who can attack the basket off the dribble and finish at the rim. He is also a very good player in the transition game where he can throw down his dunks.
Damani Green – Lakes. Green has been up and down this season but has put together some strong performances. He is showing signs of improvement, with glimpses of his scoring ability, He’s a good facilitator, setting his teammates up for better positions to score. Damani is an explosive athlete that is very good in transition when he has a full head of steam. He is an elite on ball defender and causes major havoc on opposing guards. Green is an solid three point shooter but he still needs to improve that aspect.
Jerrod Franklin – Curtis – 6’4 Power Forward. Jerrod Franklin A versatile big man at 6’4″, Jerrod Franklin is a high school version of Draymond Green. Franklin can stretch the floor and make threes but one of his biggest strengths is his leadership and basketball IQ. A very skilled combo forward who has excellent size and showcased a versatile set of talents, such as shooting, passing and ball handling. He is long and covered a lot of ground on the drive, plus he showed the ability to finish around the rim. He is a very good 3-point shooter off the catch, which also sets up his ability to put the ball on the floor.
***THE 2018 PLAYER TO WATCH***
Marcus Collins is out player to watch for 2018. He is arguably one of the point guard in Washington’s 2020 class. Crafty passer, solid shot, and plays with toughness. This young man stock is rising. He has the grit and attitude you look for in your point guard. I like this defensive intensity and his aggressive offensive prowess. I look forward to watching him grow and develop as the season goes on and into the summer where he should be playing AAU ball.
