Top performers: Hilliard Bradley vs. Northland
Hilliard Bradley took down Northland 60-40 by playing sound defense and getting 25 points from Cedarville commit Isaiah Speelman. Sophomore point guard Matt Allocco stepped up in the absence of Oakland signee Braden Norris.
Bradley improved to 8-1 while Northland has lost four of their last five games.
Isaiah Speelman (2018) 6’6″ W, Bradley
Speelman’s presence on the block set the table for the Bradley blow-out win. Spinning baseline and fading away for jumpers, Speelman hung a quick six points on the board. From there, he opened it up and knocked down triples, even outscoring the entire Northland team 17-14 in the first half. Cedarville University got a steal.
Matt Allocco (2020), 6’3″ PG, Bradley
Without his backcourt mate Braden Norris, Allocco displayed mature leadership. He’s a quick defensive player with twitchy instincts who made it rough for N’Keeley Elmore. On offense he ran around screens and was aggressive shooting the ball from deep. There were also times when he was the one setting screens in order to free himself up. He has a great feel. Also, he’s apparently been working on the post-up with his added inch of height, scoring an impressive bucket on a step-through move.
Chris Mayfield (2020), 6’4″ hybrid, Bradley
Mayfield looks like a prospect who can defend all five positions at the high school level. He has ridiculous length and uses it on rebounds and closeouts. The two-sport athlete has a very developed frame for a sophomore. Talented rebounder. He is also a strong ball-handler for a combo forward who sees the court well. Mayfield is best as a scorer in the open floor.
AJ Mirgon (2021), 5’11” PG, Bradley
Mirgon showed mature poise and ball security against the Northland ball pressure. He will be a nice pairing alongside Allocco when Norris graduates after this season.
Will Mfum (2019), 6’2″ PG, Northland
Mfum wasn’t as featured as you’d expect in the Northland offense. Their best possessions came when the 6’2″ junior attacked the rim, yet it rarely happened. Regardless, Mfum looks more confident with the ball. He’s shooting the triple without hesitation and has added enough muscle to push through the defense.
