Standouts: Chance Harman Classic Day 1
Every year some of the best teams across VA, NC and WV descend upon the quiet mountain town of Floyd County, about 30 minutes outside of Christiansburg. The 11th Annual Chance Harman Classic, which is a nonprofit event that raises money for Pediatric Brain Cancer, all through good basketball.
The first day featured three games and a dunk contest, with nine more games coming on Saturday. Here’s a look at seven of the top standouts from the first three games.
- BJ Fitzgerald | Carlisle 2018
Talk about dominating the game in every aspect, the Carlisle senior did just that in the Chiefs 88-47 blowout of Auburn to open the tournament. The 6’5” guard showed the ability to do everything as he posted an impressive triple-double of 36 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. He also pitched in seven steals on the defensive end. The athletic combo showed the ability to shoot it from deep, finish at the rack both in transition and in the half court, and he showed good vision as he thread the needle all game and kept everyone involved. His mix of strength, athleticism and skill set will translate well to the next level.
- Bryce Hall | Carlisle 2019
A high IQ guard with good feel and shotmaking ability, Hall played efficiently and and effectively in his 22 minutes. The 6’0” junior shot it well from all three levels, got in the lane at will and showed good vision and passing ability throughout the game. He finished with 24 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds as he split ball handling duties with Fitzgerald throughout the game.
- Quinton Morton-Robertson | Radford 2019
One of my favorite kids to watch in the state (I wish I got to see him more), Morton-Robertson is often the most impactful player on the floor at about 5’6”. He’s lightning quick defensively, as he sits down and turns ball handlers but also shoots the gap for steals off the ball. With the ball in his hands it’s really difficult to keep him in front, and you can’t back off him because he can hit from deep off the bounce, as he showed by knocking down two early threes. He makes the game look simple for himself and for others, and he was impressive as he scored 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting in just 15 minutes in their 59-15 blowout of Blacksburg.
- Miles Jones | Radford 2019
Jones should be a double-double machine for Radford this year, and he was just that as he had 10 points and 10 rebounds in just 14 minutes of play. The 6’5” post showed a good motor on the glass on both ends, and was efficient from 15 and in as he finished 5-for-9 from the field. He’s a versatile piece for the Bobcats and matchup problem for other teams with his versatility offensively, and he’s a solid help side defender that will protect the rim and is willing to sacrifice his body and take the charge.
- Cam Cormany | Radford 2021
When you’re the son of a five time state champion, you should know how to play, and Cormany showed he’s ready to play right away. The 5’11” guard is the son of Radford Head Coach Rick Cormany, and his high IQ for his age shows that he’s learned to play the right way. He can shoot the lights out with a quick release, attacks closeouts and is always in the right place defensively. He’ll be the next up for Radford, but it won’t take long for you to hear about him.
- Darius McGhee | Blue Ridge 2018
McGhee had the performance of the day, because without him there’s no way Blue Ridge would have come out victorious against a very good Teays Valley team. The Liberty commit poured in 36 points, going 13-from-20 from the field and 8-for-15 from deep. The 5’9” guard showed off his athleticism with a big time finish from the baseline, and once he got it going it was so tough to stop him. He gets great lift on his shot, and despite a dip he has a lightning quick release so he doesn’t need much space to get it off. He was phenomenal scoring the basketball as he scored over half of their points in their 63-58 win.
- Anderson Mirambeaux | Teays Valley 2019
The big 6’7” Domincan born Mirambeaux showed flashes of how good he is for the Lions on his way to 14 points and four rebounds in their loss. A massive individual that’s very hard to move off the block, it’s even more impressive as he has great footwork in the paint, and he has a soft touch with both hands. He can even step out and hit the midrange jump shot, and if he can continue to get his body right to help his conditioning he’ll see his production level increase moving forward.
