FIVE TAKEAWAYS: Lawrence-Gardner-Edgerton
LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Lawrence Lions showed they have the potential to be a contender this season in Kansas Class 6A as they ran away from Gardner-Edgerton with a 77-43 win on Friday in Lawrence.
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at five things that stood out in the contest.
Lawrence’s Mayo a freshman to watch
At 6’2, Lawrence 2021 guard Zeke Mayo has a long, rangy frame and a well-rounded offensive game. He came off the Lions’ bench and showed the ability to handle the ball, create off the dribble as well as a smooth 3-point stroke and a nice floater in the lane. He has a lot of upside and a bright future.
The state’s top dunker?
Give Lawrence 2018 forward Anthony Selden some daylight and he’s going to punish the rim with ferocious slam dunks. He’s particularly tough in the open court after a turnover, but is also a threat along the baseline in the half court, on alley-oops or put backs. At 6’4, Selden has good size, is a good defender and rebounder and has an emerging skill set.
Reid Frase impresses for GE
Frase hasn’t gotten a lot of attention up to this point, but he’s a versatile 6’4 2018 wing player who has a long, rangy frame and a well-rounded skill set. With the Trailblazers somewhat overmatched, Frase showed the ability to get to the bucket off the bounce, shoot the 3 and competed throughout.
Key players make debut for Lions
Clarence King, one of the state’s top 2019 guard prospects, made his debut on Friday after suffering a broken knee cap in the offseason. He went for 11 points in limited playing time but showed flashes of the abilities that helped him put together a strong spring for KC Run GMC. Also making his debut was Van Dave Jacob, a 5’6 2018 guard who attacked the basket with a quick first step and finished with a game-high 14 points.
Marshall a key player for GE
A 6’5 2019 forward, Marshall brings good size to the court and is an active player in the paint at both ends of the floor. He runs the floor well, rebounds and defends the post well. His play will be big for the Trailblazers going forward this season.
Teven McKelvey out
Gardner-Edgerton guard Teven McKelvey is among the state’s top 2020 guards, but was not dressed for Friday’s game.
