Prospect Spotlight: Luke Champion (2020)
The year ahead will be a big one for Lambert 6’6 wing Luke Champion, and after recently committing to play 16U ball with Georgia Stars EYBL, a spike in recruitment may be imminent.
We recently caught up with the big and skilled wing, and he mentioned his skill-set, strengths and weaknesses, to PHGA.
“I love shooting it, I can definitely shoot it pretty well. I play hard, and can dribble it pretty well. But mostly shooting and defense are my strengths,” said Lambert.
“I need to work on strength right now, I’ve been working on that a lot. But, especially at the next level, I think strength will be very important.”
Champion, a sophomore, is coming off the bench for a Lambert squad that started the season 7-3.
“This year, I’m getting about 8-10 minutes per game, just coming in scoring and locking down my opponent. They expect me to shoot it and that’s what I do,” he said.
“Our team goals would be to win region and then go as far as we can in the state tournament. And I’m just focusing on trying to get as good as I can be, and to be the best I can be for the rest of the year, and for the rest of my basketball career.”
Last spring and summer for his 15U season, Lambert played with Southern Stampede, he’ll play with Georgia Stars this spring and summer for 16U.
Champion is ahead of the curve when it comes to proactively thinking about his future. He’s already taken unofficial visits to Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Portland, Oregon State and Georgia. He wants to visit North Carolina State and Baylor soon.
And with a dad who’s 6’10, and brothers that go 6’8 and 6’9, there’s a chance for not only a growth spurt from Champion, but some big-time exposure, too.
“My goals for the year would be to get colleges to come look at me and see how I play,” said Champion. “And to get as much exposure as I can with colleges.”
