Cobb County After Christmas Polls Pt. 4
It has been a great holiday of hoops and the second half of the 2017-2018 season is about to be in full effect. Here is a look at our squads that round out the ranks for public school programs below. Allatoona, Marietta, Lassiter, and Osborne are the 13-17 teams in this week’s Cobb County Ranks (12/31-1/6).
Allatoona (Acworth, GA) – Record: 5-9 – Good Wins: Cartersville. Bad Losses: None
This season’s start might be the worst start for Coach Hood and his Buccaneers sqaud in awhile. The Post Trey Doomes season is not as bad as it might seem because Coach Hood and his staff will not run away from the competition. The Bucs faced some tough competition out of state and also in the peach state over the break. Allatoona came back from break with a 2-4 record. Earlier during the holiday break the Bucs competed in the Lakepoint Showcase and took a lost to McCallie (TN) 64-47. They bounced back with a region win over River Ridge. After a couple days off the Buccaneers participated in the 1st Annual Atlanta Hawks Naismith Classic at Norcross High School and took a lost to a familar team in Miller Grove. Miller Grove and Allatoona met in the 2016 Class 6A State Finals with MG coming out with the victory. After Christmas Allatoona hosted yet again the Lake City Classic. The Bucs made it passed the 1st round with a win over Cartersville 42-33 but then took back to back losses to one of Alabama’s best programs Huffman (AL) and St. Francis out of Georgia. I would not count out the Bucs as of yet, not as long as Coach Hood is still on that bench. Allatoona will travel to region opponent Sprayberry Friday Jan. 5th and then host region opponent Seqouyah Saturday Jan. 6th.
Marietta (Marietta, GA) – Record: 3-9 – Good Wins: Arabia Mountain. Bad Losses: Cherokee
The Blue Devils, after starting off 3-1, are on a 8 game losing streak. Marietta has not won a game since November 20th. The Blue Devils took three losses to Fayette County, Tri Cities, and Cherokee before competing in the loaded Tournament of Champions American Division held at Wheeler High School. Unfortunately Marietta lost all those games as well. But it is not all bad for the Blue Devils as they are developing a star in the making in 2021 PG Travis Burrus. Travis is a shifty point guard with Chris Paul type vision. Burrus is definitely a pass first guard but can score when needed too. The future is looking bright for this kid at Marietta, let us make sure we remember his name. The Blue Devils will be facing Salem in the 1st Annual Big South Shootout Tuesday Jan. 2nd. Can they bounce back and finally get a win in over a month?
Lassiter (Marietta, GA) – Record: 3-11 – Good Wins: North Paulding. Bad Losses: None
Lassiter is still Lassiter when it comes to the hardwood. The Trojans have only won a total of 15 games in 3 seasons so far, yes 15. The Trojans took a lost earlier before Christmas to North Paulding, a team they have already defeated and which is one of their good wins. Lassiter then travel to the sunshine state in Florida and competed in the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic. The Trojans came back 1-2 with a win over a program from the Bahmas in Sunland Baptist Academy and losses to Atlantic (FL) and Archbishop McCarthy (FL). Lassiter will only have one game this week where they travel to Woodstock on Friday Jan. 5th.
Osborne (Marietta, GA) – Record: 0-10 – Good Wins: None. Bad Losses: None.
The Osborne Cardinals are still winless this season so far. Coach Thomas, after making the playoffs last season, has a really young team. The Cardinals best player in my opinion is 2020 PG Matthew Smith. Smith is a young point guard but has a good skill set. Osborne only had two games over break, with one of the lost coming from their region rival Sprayberry and the other coming from Ramsay (AL) in the Big Orange Classic. The Cardinals will be facing South Cobb this week on Friday Jan. 5th and then travel to Creekview Saturday Jan. 6th.
