Notebook: Bob Wettig
The Bob Wettig Tournament is one of the best events of the year and this is one of the best groups of teams they have ever had. Wednesday provided a great look at multiple top teams in the state. This is our breakdown of each game and the top performers for each.
Shelbyville 68, Indianapolis Lighthouse South 56
Shelbyville came out slow and missing some open jumpers and Lighthouse was really strong, flexing their muscles a bit. However, late in the first half you started to see things pick up and the Lighthouse defense was leaving some gaps and Shelbyville started taking advantage. Zach Kuhn was the key as he started to drive a bit and find those gaps out to their shooters. When Lighthouse adjusted, Kuhn then started to drive. Shelbyville was in control late in the game and even a late run from Dontez Raynor wasn’t enough.
Top Performers:
Dontez Rayner (IL) – 27 points
Ajani Smith (IL) – 15 points
Sam Lewis (S) – 17 points
Zach Kuhn (S) – 16 points
Cathedral 63, Belmont (OH) 50
This game took on a different feeling following James Franklin’s dive into the bleachers for a loose ball. However, it was a great game for him and Armaan Franklin. James made a trio of threes and really looked the part of a top player and back to 100%. Armaan has been playing really well this year and definitely at a new level. He was potent off the bounce and no one from Belmont was able to slow him down. At the end of the game, it was never really that close and Cathedral walked through with a 13 point win.
Top Performers:
Armaan Franklin (C): 29 points
Jarron Coleman (C): 11 points
Kendall Moore (B): 15 points
Phillip Harewood (B): 14 points
Crispus Attucks 61, South Bend Adams 44
Attucks came out quickly and set the tone early, that they were going to push the ball and use their length. Adams wasn’t able to keep up as close as the game wore on but both Foster and Johnson were good in transition and caused some problems. Derrick Briscoe was really good in the open floor and Micah Poole was knocking down triples while Adams was only able to hit 3 in the game.
Top Performers:
Ben Foster (SBA): 13 points
Shakell Johnson (SBA): 14 points
Jamal Harris (CA): 13 points
Derrick Briscoe (CA): 14 points
Connersville 54, Northwest Warriors 36
Early on, you saw Connersville attack the interior against Northwest. That was the key early on as they drew a lot of early fouls against Northwest’s best player in junior post Ryan Segall. They got him in foul trouble using a ton of drives and sophomore Jacob Brown. Northwest Warriors did keep it close over the middle quarters but late in the third Connersville really started to pull away led by Garrett Silcott’s 13 points.
Top Performers:
Brandon Winchester (NW): 13 points
Nathan Brown (NW): 8 points
Garrett Silcott (C): 13 points
Noah Belt (C): 11 points
Park Tudor 65, Franklin Central 45
Franklin Central showed early on that they could match up a bit with their perimeter shooting and threatened to be a part of this game. Then you saw Park Tudor’s Isiah Moore go down on a big time hipcheck in the second quarter. The game was still close at that point but it was the youth of Park Tudor’s roster with guys like Cole Greenwalt, Kadaphi Honaker, and Ronald Johnson that stepped up and was able to pull away in the second half.
Top Performers:
Isiah Moore (PT): 14 points
Ronald Johnson (PT): 13 points
Mason Gonzales (FC): 8 points
Alan Cox (FC): 12 points
Tindley 93, Greensburg 70
From the jump, this was a game about making jump shots and Tindley made a ton of them. They had 5 players in double figures, 2 with over 20 and they made 15 threes in the game. This was about as flawless a game as you are going to see this year. Tindley didn’t miss many chances while Greensburg was good but not great and had trouble defending Tindley on the perimeter.
Top Performers:
Lane Sparks (G): 24 points
Drew Comer (G): 20 points
Eric Hunter Jr. (T): 25 points
Sincere McMahon (T): 26 points
Richmond 73, Indianapolis Homeschool 65
This was the best battle of the day as Homeschool was able to be very competitive from tip to final buzzer with Luke Ruddle and Mitchell Wirts knocking down threes. However, the backcourt duo of Rickie Wedlow and Christian Harvey was really good in the middle part of the game as they combined for 51 points in the game. Homeschool showed they won’t be an easy out the rest of the week here in Richmond.
Top Performers:
Christian Harvey (R): 29 points
Rickie Wedlow (R): 22 points
Mitchell Wirts (IH):19 points
Luke Ruddle (IH): 24 points
Portage 55, Seton Catholic 43
Portage and Seton Catholic battle early on and even into halftime they were really aggressive and playing uptempo. Portage was just bigger and stronger at most positions and especially in their backcourt with Maurion Martin. The junior guard scored 24 points and was the toughness all game long. Seton Catholic got some balanced help on offense but it wasn’t enough to overtake Portage in the final quarter.
Top Performers:
Maurion Martin (P): 24 points
Noah Penrose (P): 11 points
Zach Rogers (SC): 13 points
Nick Berger (SC): 11 points
