Prospect Watch: Cameron Soenksen (2020)
Without a doubt, Camanche 6-foot guard Cameron Soenksen is one of the most dynamic sophomores in Iowa.
It’s his athleticism, leaping ability and skill meshed together that allows him to dominate, and he’s working to add some new dimensions to his game, too.
“One thing that I’ve been working on heavily, is I’ve been getting into the weight-room. That’s one thing I didn’t have a lot of last year, was strength. And I’ve been able to create space better, and jump a little higher, and box out a little better and get more rebounds,” said Soenksen, Iowa’s 12th-ranked 2020.
“And I’ve been working a lot on my ball-handling, and being able to control the ball with a defender on me.”
As a freshman with the Indians, Soenksen was a starting guard and helped lead his squad to a state tourney berth while averaging 13.9 points per game. This season, he’s upped that average to 21.3 per game.
“My role from last year has changed a lot. Last year we had a lot of seniors that were leaders, and this year, coach really challenged me to step up and be one of the main leaders on the team,” said Soenksen.
“We have a lot of talent coming up, and coach has really emphasized for me to get people in the gym, in the weight-room, and just be a great leader on and off the court.”
Still with plenty of time left for his recruitment to materialize, that’s something that Soenksen isn’t concerning himself too much with right now.
“I try and stay away from all that because I’m still so young. I’m just trying to go out there and play the best I can, and I feel like recruitment will come later on,” said Soenksen.
And he could see a spike in that recruitment this spring and summer while playing his 16U season with the Iowa Mavericks.
“I’m going to be playing with Coach Tyler Cleveland and the Mavs, and he’s really going to help me become a leader, and help me with my ball-handling and my shot,” said Soenksen. “I’m excited to play with the Mavs.”
