Recruiting Report: Gavyn Elkamil (2020)
PITTSBURG, Kan. — One of Kansas’ premier young guards, 6’4 2020 Gavyn Elkamil is off to a strong start to his sophomore season and is starting to draw attention from college programs.
At 6’4, 190-pounds, Elkamil is a skilled player who can do a little bit of everything well. He is a standout shooter who is also capable of creating off the bounce for himself and his teammates.
A young player for his class, Elkamil spent the offseason competing for the MoKan 14U elite team and says the experience of playing alongside several talented teammates was a good one.
“We won a couple tournaments and made it to the finale but didn’t do as good as expected,” he said. “I have became a better ball handler and my ability to get to the rack is a lot better since this summer.”
One year after going x-x and advancing to the Class 5A state championships in Topeka, Pittsburg is off to a 2-2 start this season and are currently ranked six in 5A. Elkamil is putting together a well-rounded stat line, averaging 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists per game.
Elkamil says three people have influence his basketball career the most — his parents and his uncle Marcus.
“My dad and uncle have been training with me since I was around 5,” he said. “If there’s a camp that I got invited to they always make sure I’m able to go. Always are there to talk to me up before games.”
A fan of Alabama freshman Collin Sexton, Elkamil says he enjoys his energy and passion for the game.
“He is able to score at will and he always make me more motivated to go play,” he said.
Elkamil has drawn interest from Wichita State and says he is currently working on improving his athleticism, tightening up his handle and his pull-up game.
