Standouts: City of Palms Classic (Day 2)
Day 2 of the 45th annual City of Palms Classic was in full force with six total games on Tuesday on the campus of Florida Southwestern College.
Four of the games were part of the traditional bracket while there was a consolation matchup and a sunshine series clash.
Here are the top standouts from Tuesday’s games.
Jaylon Hoard (North Carolina Wesleyan Christian)
The Wake Forest commit did more than enough damage inside to guide the Trojans to victory over Orlando Christian Prep. The 6’8″ forward had 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting which included about six ferocious dunks. Hoard opened up the tournament with a solid performance. We will see if he can knock down more jumpers in Thursday’s quarterfinal.
James Wiseman (Memphis East)
The 2019 big man impressed with his long range shooting ability. Wiseman, a 7-footer shot 5-of-6 from the field in the opening half with 12 points. He finished the 76-58 win over Lakewood Ranch with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Wiseman is going to be dangerous at the Division I level.
Vernon Carey Jr. (University)
Carey Jr. was the best player on the floor against Archbishop Molloy. His 6’10” frame and attacking ability was simply too much for Archbishop Molloy to slow down in a 75-64 victory. Carey Jr. had 23 points and eight rebounds as he never stopped putting in a full effort.
Bryan Antoine (New Jersey Ranney)
Antoine led Ranney with 30 points on an efficient 14-of-20 on the day in a 70-59 win over Canterbury. A high Division-I talent, Antoine is carrying this team with Scottie Lewis nicked up with a dislocated finger. Expect this team to be motivated to win the consolation bracket.
Khalid Moore (Archbishop Molloy)
Committed to Georgia Tech last month, Moore had a complete game against University. He scored a team-best 23 points on 9-of-13 from the field. After scoring nine points in the first half, it was impressive to see the 6’6″ senior turn it up when it mattered most.
Berrick Jeanlouis (Canterbury)
After pumping up the City of Palms crowd on Monday night, Jeanlouis put together a fine afternoon with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. He also had nine rebounds in an aggressive battle in a loss to Ranney in the consolation game.
Nassir Little (Orlando Christian Prep)
It was a nice start for Nassir Little with 22 first half points but he scored only two points over the final two quarters. The 6’7″ senior North Carolina commit found himself in foul trouble late and was taken out of a good amount of sets by Wesleyan Christian.
Trendon Watford (Mountain Brook)
2019 Mountain Brook forward Trendon Watford did just about all he could for the Spartans with 31 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and a block in a tough 62-61 loss to Mater Dai to end the night. He hit 12-of-16 from the field and was unstoppable for much of the game. He drove to the basket with ease. At 6’9″, he has impressive handles and a high motor along with weaving ability.
Jamal Mashburn Jr. (Gulliver Prep)
With his father, a former NBA star Jamal Mashburn watching, Mashburn Jr. did his thing in the win over Lehigh. The sophomore scored a game-high 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. Outside of an airballed 3-pointer, he never stopped shooting and making plays out of nothing. The sky is the limit for Mashburn Jr.
Cole Anthony (Archbishop Molloy)
Similar to Hudson Catholic senior guard Jahvon Quinerly, 2019 Archbishop Molloy guard Cole Anthony does more of the same. Standing at 6’2″, the junior isn’t afraid of drawing contact on both ends of the floor. He went to the rack time and time again and was smart with the ball to finish with 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Trey Doomes (University)
Doomes, a West Virginia commit was superb in the first half against Archbishop Molloy with 12 points. The senior guard ended the game with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. He also had nine rebounds and six assists. He played an unselfish style in the second half creating space for his teammates. Doomes is a physical presence defensively at 6’3.”
Bershard Edwards (Lehigh)
It took awhile for Edwards to get going, but it was fun to watch the senior never give up. He finished with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. Edwards is as scrappy as you can be. I think he deserves a lot more attention from college coaches for the way he handles himself all game long.
Bonus: Play of the Day
University School’s Vernon Carey Jr. flips it to Scottie Barnes for a sweet slam. This combo is fun to watch.
