Iowa’s Premier Performers (Week 3)
Each week, we’ll sift through quikstats.com, Twitter, emails and the like in search of the best performances from around the state. It’s the 40-point games, triple doubles and stat-stuffing performances that are likely to make the list. Below, you’ll find 10 of this week’s eye-opening performances.
Spencer Tucker (2019)
5’11 PG, Oskaloosa
35 points, 8-12 3s, 7 assists, 2 steals
With a high basketball IQ and a butter stroke from deep, it’s no wonder this junior point guard is blossoming into a superstar this season. He showed glimpses of what he could do when we saw him Friday against DC-G, and then erupted the next night out against E-B-F.
Jake Hilmer (2019)
5’10 PG, North Linn
45 points, 7-10 3s, 11 assists, 9 steals, 6 rebounds
For the third straight week, Hilmer makes this list; that’s a new record, we think. We do like to mix it up a bit, but when a guy goes for 42 points in one half of basketball, there’s just no way wee can leave him off. Expect lots of records to be shattered by the Iowa Barnstormers point guard over the next two seasons.
Cade Daugherty (2018)
6′ G, Bellevue
40 points (17-24 FGs), 12 rebounds, 4 assists
The first of what could be several 40-point games for the skilled Bellevue guard came last week in a win over Durant. Daugherty was magnificent every time we saw him this past spring, and we’re really not surprised at his massive success in the early going this season. He’s averaging 23.9 points through the first nine games.
Luke Vaske (2018)
6′ PG, Norwalk
14 points (4-6 FGs), 17 assists, 6 rebounds
After being more of a scoring threat in the past, Vaske continues to prove that he can be one of the state’s best pure point guards. He dished out a season-high in the state 17 assists in a Warriors win over Perry; a game in which Norwalk tallied 105 points. It’s their second 100-point game of the season.
Joe Wieskamp (2018)
6’6 G/F, Muscatine
44 points, 25 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks
In what is easily the most absurd stat-line of the season, this future Iowa Hawkeyes wing nabbed a career-high 25 rebounds and notched his first 40-point game of the season (his second would come later in the week) last Tuesday in a win over Davneport North. Wieskmap is not only leading the state in scoring, but rebounding too; what a monster.
Dev Patel (2018)
6’1 PG, Camanche
11 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists
There hasn’t been many triple-doubles this season, especially compared to last winter, but this veteran Camamche point guard posted one in a win last Tuesday night against Wilton. Patel is averaging 14.4 points, 7.0 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game this season. We don’t expect this to be his last trip-doub.
Carter Cuvelier (2019)
6’3 SF, Aplington-Parkersburg
18 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 7 steals
We’re big fans of the 5-5-5-5 stat lines, but Cuvelier posted a 7-7-7-7. Imagine if it was poker, four of a kind fives are great, but four sevens are better. So, if someone posted and 8-8-8-8 game, etc… they’re likely to make the Premier Performers list. Anyway, good game, Carter. And A-P got the win, too, over Dike-New Hartford.
Hunter Ray (2018)
6’4 C, Montezuma
13 points, 10 blocks, 9 rebounds
The 10 blocks in a win over over HLV, Victor were a season high in Iowa, and probably the main reason why the Warriors could only manage nine points in the game. Ray was painstakingly close to a trip-doub, but those 10 blocks were impressive enough to land him on this list.
Elijah Hazekamp (2018)
6’5 SF, Bishop Heelan
27 points, 21 rebounds
Ah, the good ‘ol 20-20 game. And what makes it even more impressive, is it came in a win over one of 4A’s best squads, Sioux City East. Hazekamp is headed to D1 North Dakota next season, and is doing a nice job of validating his high 2018 prospect ranking (No. 6). Through three games, he’s averaging 26.7 point and 16.7 rebounds. Woof.
Cameron Krumm (2018)
6’4 C, Tri-County, Thornburg
28 points, 25 rebounds, 14 offensive rebounds, 3 blocks
The 20-20 games are nice, but for the second time this season, and the second time in a week (see Wieskamp), we had a 25-25 game in Iowa. These are ultra-rare, but Krumm was able to accomplish the feat in a 61-19 thrashing of English Valleys last Tuesday. Krumm is averaging 17.4 points and 10.4 rebounds through seven games.
