Marquee Matchups: Recapping Week 3
Christian Guess scored 57 points, a pair of Cincinnati-area teams proved themselves as contenders, and a few Northwest Ohio teams separated from the pack in their respective conferences during week three. That and more in this week’s Marquee Matchup preview.
Dec. 11: The Wellington School (64) at Bishop Hartley (72)
Payton Collins, a 6’7” forward, continues his breakout junior season for Hartley, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Bellarmine signee Garrett Tipton added 18 points and eight assists for Hartley, per 270 Hoops.
Dec. 12: Toledo St. Francis (55) at Lima Senior (54)
Late game defensive heroics were the difference for the Knights in their one-point conference win. St. Francis juniors Jakiel Wells (24 points) and Jackson Harris (20 points and 16 rebounds) led the way, per LimaOhio.com.
Dec. 14: St. Ignatius (79) at Cleveland Heights (69)
A couple nights removed from St. Ignatius’s first loss of the season against Cornerstone Christian, they beat Cleveland Heights on the road. Unsigned senior Yahel Hill had his third 30-point performance of the season for Heights, per Cleveland.com.
Dec. 15: Cincinnati Taft (56) at Cincinnati Hughes (61)
Taft drops to 0-3 after a tough rivalry loss to Hughes. Unsigned point guard Giovanni Santiago continues to make his case for First Team All State after a 24 point performance, per Cincinnati.com.
Dec. 15: Shaker Heights (108) at Mentor (95)
Unsigned 6’6” wing Christian Guess dropped 57 points to move Shaker Heights to 3-0 on the season. The Raiders are shaping up to be one of the top Division I teams in Northeast Ohio this season.
Dec. 15: Anthony Wayne (52) at Sylvania Southview (69)
Southview dominated both sides of the floor in a Northern Lakes League victory. Christian Wagenhauser and Ryan Fries each scored 20 as the Cougars moved to 4-0.
Dec. 15: Cincinnati Wyoming (56) at Deer Park (65)
Deer Park passed their first real test of the season, after winning by a combined 192 points in their first four games. Sophomore lead guard Mark Wise led the team with 19 points while Wyoming’s duo of Evan Prater and Joey Edmonds combined for 44, per Corey Albertson.
Dec. 15: Cleveland Central Catholic (73) at Benedictine (82)
The Bengals got their second win of the season against a rival opponent. Senior guard Chris Jefferson scored 27 for Benedictine while Davin Zeigler added 18.
Dec. 15: Toledo Rogers (64) at Toledo Waite (56)
In the presumptive Toledo City League Championship preview, Rogers rolled over the Indians with 26 points from sophomore Da’Sean Nelson. Waite guard Carl Banks scored 30 in the loss, per the Toledo Blade.
Dec. 15: Trotwood-Madison (100) at Xenia (57)
A 42 point game by junior 6’4” combo guard Amari Davis led Trotwood to a blow-out victory in a conference game. The Rams improved to 3-1 and broke the century mark in both games this week.
Dec. 16: Dublin Coffman (56) at Reynoldsburg (53)
Sixteen points a piece from Reynoldsburg seniors Jamiel Goliday and Tre Williams wasn’t enough to overcome 21 points from sophomore point guard Dominiq Penn, per 270 Hoops. This is Coffman’s most impressive win in their 5-0 start.
Dec. 16: Eastmoor Academy (70) at Purcell Marian (66)
It took overtime for Eastmoor to triumph in their road game against Purcell. Unsigned 6’4” guard Taevion Kinsey had a team-high 28 points for the Warriors, per 270 Hoops. Eastmoor has another tough week ahead with games against South, Africentric, and Dayton Dunbar.
Dec. 16: St. Ignatius (54) at Solon (72)
Solon’s big three of Sincere Carry, Michael Bekelja, and Trent Williams combined for 53 points and took it to Ignatius at home, per Cleveland.com. The Comets are 5-0 going into their Friday night contest against Mentor next week.
Dec. 17: Stow (64) at St. Vincent-St. Mary (54)
Stow improved to 3-0 at the Lebron James Wingfoot Classic against the host’s alma mater. Stow’s 6’8″ forwards Mason McMurray (2018) and Evan Bainbridge (2019) combined for 46 points, per Cleveland.com.
