Standouts: Lakewood at Gibbs
When Lakewood and Gibbs plays one another it is always a close and intense battle. Friday’s meeting at Gibbs was no different.
Lakewood held on for the 46-44 victory in the Class 6A-District 11 rivalry.
Trailing 38-33 after three quarters of play, the Spartans came out firing in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Lakewood used a 6-0 run and a 13-6 advantage to put Gibbs away.
Here are the top standouts on the night.
Jalen White (Lakewood)
Jalen White does so much that doesn’t show up on the typical stat sheet. He wins battles in the paint on both sides of the ball, leads the charge with his ballhandling and sets the tone for his offense. Very seldom does White make a mistake. The junior guard had 12 points on the night, routinely getting to the free throw stride. He’s one strong kid.
David Pierce (Gibbs)
David Pierce, a senior Coastal Carolina commit scored a game-high 24 points with 14 coming in the second half alone. He was out of gas towards the end. Off a Bryce Brown missed free throw, Pierce took the ball up the court but lost possession. He then got the rock on the final play but couldn’t connect for the game-winning 3-pointer. Pierce is a determined kid who is one of the most gifted shooters in the state.
Oteman Delancy (Lakewood)
Freshman Oteman Delancy led his Spartans with 15 points a trio of 3’s, two coming in the opening quarter. Delancy benefited from the passing of guard Corey Davis and the White brothers. He made shots when his team needed it the most.
Tre Gilliam (Gibbs)
It wasn’t Tre Gilliam’s brightest night offensively with only seven points, but he worked the ball around and got his teammates involved. The sophomore guard is super fast and has a knack for opening up things in transition. He has to keep working after this one.
Adrian White (Lakewood)
Senior Adrian White scored all five of his points in the fourth quarter as he gritted his teeth and went to work. The brother of Jalen White, Adrian was physical in the post and superb defensively all night long. He’s a high energy player who never stops going.
