Prospect Spotlight: Max Johnson (2018)
With the graduation of AJ Pleasant, there is a new point guard taking over at Blue Valley Northwest this season.
Enter Max Johnson, a hard-nosed 5’11 2018 floor general who loves competing and playing high level defense.
Johnson spent the offseason competing for the Midwest Flight and says the experience helped him become a more complete player.
“I really worked on changing speeds and becoming a more dominant scorer,” he said.
This year’s Huskies team features several high level players who will likely have an opportunity to play at the next level, including Parker Braun, Christian Braun, Joe Pleasant and Sam Ward.
All either hold offers, have committed or are fielding interest from college programs.
“On our team we have good chemistry,” Johnson said. “(We) have been playing together for a long time. The season has started pretty well. The atmosphere at practice is high and the whole team is focused on the same goal and that is to win another state championship.”
Johnson says Valentino Reyes, who coached him when he was a part of the KC Celtics, has had the biggest influence on his basketball career to date.
“He took me to a lot camps and tournaments around the country as a kid and made me the player I am today,” he said.
Johnson, who says he is still working on getting stronger and above the rim, says he enjoys watching old college highlights of Angel Rodriguez.
“I try to take his basketball IQ and high level of play and put it into my game,” Johnson said.
