Week 1: Importance of the Assist
Sometimes to much emphasis gets put on how many points a player scores. We can’t forget to look at the guys who put their teammates in position to score or deliver the ball on point for a bucket. In Week 1 of the high school season there were a lot of players who took the role of running their teams offense and dishing out assists. We will look are three point guards who had strong performances in Week 1.
Rocket Watts (2019, PG, Old Redford)
Watts can do it all as a point guard. He’s an elite talent nationally and a player who can score in bunches from anywhere on the court. His Old Redford team opened up the season against a tough Walled Lake Western team. In a 63-61 overtime win, Watts was a leader on offense. He was able to find teammates in scoring position and his ability to make smart and accurate passes was a highlight of the game. Watts dished out 9 assists in the win.
Peyton McDonough (2018, PG, Glen Lake)
McDonough is the definition of a point guard. He sets the offense and makes sure players are where they need to be. He gives off the aura of a coach on the floor. McDonough is a perfect fit playing alongside Xander Okerlund who is a prolific shooter. His Glen Lake team squared off against Elk Rapids in Week 1. McDonough was a critical piece of a 69-45 victory. He handed out 8 assists while running the offense.
Kortez Williams (2018, PG, Sexton)
Williams is a shifty point guard who prides himself in driving and dishing. He keeps the ball low to the ground and uses his straight line speed to create opportunities for himself and his teammates. Sexton lost their season opener 59-48 to a strong Holt team. Williams played strong and showed a will and desire to keep his team in the game. He ran the offense well and did a nice job creating opportunities out of nothing against a tough Holt defense.
