Mr. Basketball Candidate: Romeo Langford
The high school season got underway this week and we are excited about the games but just as excited about the players. One of the biggest things to watch every season is the Mr. Basketball award. Today, we wanted to start our preview series for the contenders for that award. We begin with a look at New Albany’s Romeo Langford.
Bio: Romeo Langford
Height: 6’4
Position: SG
High School: New Albany
AAU: 22 Vision
College: N/A
Romeo Langford has been building towards this season since he was a freshman. Much like last season, we saw Kris Wilkes of North Central (IN) as the easy frontrunner and Romeo will be just that his season. He’s got so many things going in his favor and maybe most important is that he’s a great person. Around all the other things that are going to make him a Mr. Basketball contender, he’s very easy to like.
Building his case is vast and expansive. He’s one of the best players in the country, Top 5 for the top services in the country. Not only that, there isn’t anyone in the state that is near him with regards to nationally rankings. He’s also uncommitted and considering Indiana as a college which, as a player from southern Indiana, is making him a state-wide priority. Also, he’s chasing the all-time state career scoring record and has a within reason ability to get there and at worst should end up in the Top 10.
For Langford, he does have the issue that Kris Wilkes ran into late in the year which is can his team go far enough into the tournament to continue the buzz in March when other might have fallen off. New Albany isn’t as good as last season, at least on paper, but Langford is also a better player than Wilkes and has that recruiting buzz. The reality, though, is he is selling out gyms and not committing until the spring and New Albany is still winning games and he has put up 47 and 48 points already this year. Hard to argue with that and not to mention, he’s a worthy person for the award.
