Weekend Wonders: Class of 2018 Guards
Greenfield School Guard Coby White: There is not too much more we can say about Coby that you don’t already know .He is on pace to break the state scoring record before the season ends and showed why this weekend. He broke an event record for points in a single game with 46 points against a very tough Garner squad, that will be a force in the 4A division. UNC Tar Heel fans can be excited because this young man has pro potential and brings the shooting to Chapel Hill that they need.
Overhills HS Guard Latrell Lloyd: He got off to a slow start but turned it up in the 2nd half, finishing with 19 Points on the night. He’s quick, athletic and when he’s knocking down his jump shot, he can be a difficult player for guards to defend. Latrell hasn’t been on the court for a long amount of time due to his time on the football field but once he gets into full basketball shape, he will be a huge part of the success of Overhills HS.
Cardinal Gibbons Guard John Maurer: He was A big part of the reason of why his squad was able to stay competitive in a matchup with Mt.Zion. He knocked down multiple treys from deep and found numerous other ways to score the ball against good defenders. He would finish with 21 Points on the day to go along with 4 Assist displaying a nice IQ and overall feel for the game.
Cape Fear Christian Point Guard Isaiah Tatum: What really stood out about this young man’s performance against John Marshall High School, is how well he was able to handle defensive pressure. He doesn’t allow himself to get sped up and didn’t turn the ball over much, Once he knocks down the deep ball with some more consistency , his recruitment should rise even more.
Greenfield School Elijah McCadden: He didn’t have his best day scoring the ball but made a nice impact on the defensive end, as well as offensively with his ability to distribute the ball. He didn’t turn the ball over much and got the ball to teammates in spots for easy buckets.
Bull City Prep Guard Malique Jacobs: The last time we saw Malique play, he put on a scoring exhibition that had the crowd at the Hoops & Dreams Showcase going crazy. Well, this time he didn’t have a great scoring game but looked to get teammates involved and played high level defense. He was constantly communicating with his team and coaches, and is a player that clearly needs to be tracked by top JUCO programs.
