Mr. Basketball Contender: Eric Hunter Jr.
The high school season got underway this week and we are excited about the games but just as excited about the players. One of the biggest things to watch every season is the Mr. Basketball award. Today, we wanted to start our preview series for the contenders for that award. We begin with a look at Indianapolis Tindley’s Eric Hunter.
Bio: Eric Hunter
Height: 6’3
Position: SG
High School: Indianapolis Tindley
AAU: Team Harris 2018
College: Purdue
Being a guy like Tindley’s Eric Hunter, a guy that has been on the state’s radar for years now and is committed to a state school like Purdue, that is going to be something in his favor. He’s a visible player who has been excellent his entire career, has a ring, and still has a year to add to his resume.
For Eric Hunter, we have seen him just get done winning a state title just like Ben Davis’ Aaron Henry. Hunter did it at the 1A level for Indianapolis Tindley and sitting a year later, he could be ready to pick up his second title. One would have to think that two State Championships in a 4-year career will be really difficult to top and Hunter looks like the most likely of this group to be able to actually win another one.
While a player like Romeo Langford is nearing the top of the career scoring list, senior Eric Hunter is getting there as well. He currently sits at #109 now but realistically could get into the Top 20 before the end of the year. In any other year, Hunter has an outstanding resume and likely unbeatable. It still should carry weight with the voters, being that good and playing in the Indianapolis area and a possible second ring on the way. Nobody would be able to match what he has done over his four year career if that is the end result and would make people think twice.
